The Talanta City Sports Stadium Completion is set for December this year. This stadium is among the stadiums in Kenya that will be used to host the AFCON 2027. This was revealed by the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya.

Mvurya, during his maiden visit at the Stadium construction site, on 23rd January 2025, was impressed with the works by China Road and Bridge Corporation, who is the contractor tasked to develop the project. The Chinese-backed contractor was also involved in the development of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Talanta Sports City Stadium Factsheet

Location: Jamhuri Grounds, along Ngong Road, approximately 10 kilometers west of Nairobi’s central business district.

Capacity: 60,000 spectators.

Field Size: 105m x 68m.

Surface: Grass.

Construction: Began on March 1, 2024, with completion expected by December 2025.

Cost: Estimated at $250 million.

Contractor: China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

Purpose: Designed exclusively for football and rugby matches, with no athletics track. It will host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Features: Tech-savvy facility with top-level live TV broadcasts, VAR, and goal-line technology. It also includes seven changing rooms and green spaces.

Current Status of the Talanta Sports City Stadium

Currently, the construction works on the stadium facility are on the third decker, where the terraces are being set up.

“From today’s briefing and from what I have seen, I can say that the stadium will be ready in December. I am very impressed with the progress here and also with other Stadiums (I.e. Nyayo and Kasarani). As you can see, there is a lot of work going on in all the departments such as the VIP stand and the terraces. Definitely, it’s going on well,” Mvurya commented after finishing the inspection.

Furthermore, Mvurya commented by saying “Most football fans in the country are keenly observing the progress of this staium. This is because we (Kenya) will be hosting the Africa Cup of Nations alongside Tanzania and Uganda. I assure the fans that it will be ready and they will enjoy the game (football).”

The Talanta Sports City Stadium sits on 45.64 hectares of land along Ngong Road, Nairobi. The stadium will have an outdoor training field, a standard athletic field and also a rugby training field.

Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums Renovation Update

On other stadium projects, the Cabinet Secretary confirmed that the renovation works at Nyayo Stadium were complete after the flood lights were installed. Also set up at the facility are changing rooms, CAF offices, and a playing surface.

As for the Kasarani Stadium, the Cabinet Secretary confirmed that the Canopy roof has already been completed.

Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums will be used to host Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) which has been postponed to August this year (2025).

Other stadium facilities that will foresee development works are the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Eldoret’s 64 Stadium, and Bukhungu Stadium.
