The implementation of Tanzania’s dry port in Dodoma takes shape as Tanzania Port Authority acquires 490 hectares for its development. The project aims to boost logistics services in Tanzania. The planned Ihumwa Dry Port in Dodoma aims to complement another dry port infrastructure that is taking shape in the Kwala area. The port in the coastal area of Kwala plans for an expansion. Once completed, the two facilities are expected to enhance Tanzania’s trade capacity by reducing congestion at the Port of Dar es Salaam.

 

The newly unveiled project aims to propagate the nation’s ambition as a growing hub for regional and international trade. Moreover, it adds to other projects already underway, including railway projects and improvements in maritime logistics. TPA Director General Plasduce Mbossa revealed that the land use plan has already been completed. Moreover, the development is set to include railway lines, a marshaling yard, and facilities for handling imports and exports.

“The Ihumwa Dry Port will bring the Port of Dar es Salaam closer to key inland regions, facilitating faster and more cost-effective transportation of goods. It will also serve as an export hub for produce from the central regions,” said Mr Mbossa. Located 105 kilometers from Dar es Salaam in the Coastal Region, the Kwala Dry Port is also expected to reduce congestion at the primary port. Tanzania’s dry port in Dodoma and Kwala port offers numerous advantages, including improved traffic flow and port efficiency. It spans 500 hectares, with over five hectares already paved for container stacking.

TPA expects to begin phase II of the port’s development in 2025. The government has noted that Kwala will serve as an inland extension of Dar es Salaam Port. Furthermore, it will facilitate faster customs clearance, reduce turnaround times, and offer rail and truck transport options. It also helps reduce transportation costs by providing additional container space and preventing road congestion.
