Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister has commended the completion of the Julius Nyerere hydropower plant project. Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister, Dr. Dotto Biteko, noted that the plant was completed on March 22. Moreover, he clarified that the plant is complete as the plant’s ninth turbine had officially been handed over. Despite this feat, he noted the importance of proper electricity usage to prevent wastage. He also stated that this focus would enhance efficiency in the energy sector, noting research statistics from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The dam is expected to meet the high electricity demands that have surged from 1,470 MW to 1,908 MW. Dr. Biteko urged the council members to serve as ambassadors in promoting clean energy nationwide. “The milestone meets our national electricity demand and sets the stage for sustainable industrial growth and access to reliable electricity for the entire citizenry,” he stated. Furthermore, he noted that this energy surplus will help boost education.
