Two footpaths will be constructed along the Narok-Maai Mahiu highway at an approximate cost of Sh80 million, by the government through the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA).

One footpath will be built across the River Narok in Narok Town. This is according to a representative of KeNHA Engineer Duncan Oduor. He said that another one will be constructed across the River Siyiabei close to the Maasai Mara Technical Training Institute.

All officials of departments in the National Government were present at a county service delivery meeting that Oduor addressed in the conference hall of the County Commissioner.

He stated that feasibility studies have already been conducted and are scheduled to be completed this year. According to him, construction would begin in January 2023.

He said that there is a lot of traffic at these two points. In order to relieve traffic at these points, he added that they will widen the road by building a footpath, the engineer said during the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde.

Who are the beneficiaries of the construction of the two footpaths?

The construction of the footpaths is a huge relief for the residents of Narok, especially students at Maasai Mara University and St. Peter’s Primary School who cross the River Narok bridge to enter Narok town. Also, Maasai Mara Technical Institution students who cross the River Siyabei daily will benefit from the infrastructure.

The engineer also criticized the rising litter on the road reserves at the same time. He said that it blocks drainage systems from working effectively. This results into flash floods during rainy seasons.

Masinde promised to work with the relevant county government departments to place trash cans in strategic locations across the town and along highways.

On August 26, 2011, the former president Kibaki formally inaugurated the Maai Mahiu-Narok Road. The road links the Nairobi to the South Rift, the renowned Maasai Mara game reserve, western Kenya, and Luo Nyanza.
