Bouygues subsidiary ULiving has been granted the tender for designing, building, financing and operating five new university of Essex accommodation blocks.
The French company scooped the £98m tender through its ULiving university development arm, with Bouygues UK set to do the design and build task. After completion, the new university of Essex accommodation blocks will give additional 1,262 beds to the accommodation facility, at the Colchester campus.
It will give a mix of standard, ensuite and with studio rooms. Referred to as the latest phase of the Meadows accommodation development, it is set for completion and occupied by students by the start of the 2023/2024 academic year.
The project is part of the substantial development programme to expand the university for a higher student population, with over 2,600 student beds in total. Today, there are 4,787 bed spaces at the campus. ULiving and Bouygues UK have carried out the whole programme, which started in 2012 with the signing of their first contract and a long-term maintenance agreement.
The group completed the first phase of the job, it consisted building a 767-room site, for the start of the 2013/14 academic year, completed phase 2a, a 643-bedroom site, in September 2018, and is now set to deliver phases 2b and 2c. Bouygues E&S Solutions will run the residences until 2062 when the completion of the construction project will end.
