Plans are underway for the construction of US$ 3bn Kwala Satellite City in Tanzanias Kwala Area in Kibaha District. Over 200 industries will be built in the area in two phases. The implementation of the project began in March 2022. It is expected to be completed within a span of 24 months. 

Upon completion, the Sino-Tan-developed Kwala Satellite City project will boost the economy of the state. In addition, it will be a key contributor to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Features of the Kwala Satellite City in Tanzania

The Kwala Satellite City will be home to various facilities, according to Group Six International deputy general manager Yi XIaobo. Group Six International is the company contracted to carry out the project.

The facilities in question consist of homes, office buildings, and commercial buildings. In addition, Kwala Satellite City will also have mosques, churches, police stations, fuel stations, and fire assembly stations.

XIaobo stated that the 200+ industries will make food products, pharmaceuticals, and industrial materials. These materials include shoes and clothes, cooking gas, transport materials, as well as steel.

Expected impacts on the people

According to Mr. YI, the Kwala Satellite City project will create over 100,000 indirect jobs in addition to over 1,000 direct jobs. Upon completion, he added, the industries would provide more than a million direct and indirect jobs for Tanzanians.

Moreover, he said that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Kwala Inland Container Depot (ICD), and the Dar es Salaam-Coast-Morogoro highway will all be utilized maximumly by the industries.

As a result, the Kwala Satellite City will ease cargo and container congestion at the Dar es Salaam Port. Furthermore, the city will also benefit the neighboring landlocked countries. These countries include Burundi, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Malawi, Uganda, and Zambia. They all rely on the Dar es Salaam port to import and export of goods.
