Construction of the first phase of the world’s largest life science campus has been launched after the announcement by the Texas Medical Center. The project has been backed by US$1.8 billion in financing from various bodies that are interested in property development and life science investment. According to the Texas Medical Center, it has been estimated that Texas will benefit from the project to the effect of nearly US$5.4 billion yearly. Over 23,000 new occupations will be created in Harris County that will cover virtually all industries, tax levels, pay scales, and educational backgrounds.

Phase One of the TMC 3 campus includes 950,000 square feet dedicated to translational research. It also includes a 700,000 square foot facility developed by Bradwell, a life science-focused investment firm, and Boston-based Beacon Capital Partners. The landscape design was done by Texas Medical Center’s 3’s defining feature is the Helix Gardens, a green space that weaves through the heart of the campus and is open to the public and Mikyoung Kim. The Helix Gardens are a chain of five public parks, each approximately the size of a football field, and they will offer lawns, tree canopies, water features, walking paths, cafes, and a central garden for outdoor concerts, graduations, receptions, and other large-scale events.
