Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association (ZBCA) is a non-profit national organisation formed in 1985 with a mandate to represent building contractors in the category of Building and Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Structural Steel Engineering fields.
The purpose of the Association is to ensure that its members uphold the observance of the highest standards of workmanship in the construction business.
ZBCA is driven by its members , who through their participation in Association structures , such as regional committees, provide direction and guidance to the Association Secretariat.
The Association registers suppliers as associate members and has more than 250 members nationwide located in the 5 administrative regions.
The Association hosted their 16th Annual General Meeting from the 9th– 11th of November 2016, at Montclaire Hotel in Nyanga, under the theme ‘Economic Revival Through Infrastructural Development’.
Mr. Obert Sibanda ,ZBCA President, said that the theme should attract people as it was focusing on economic revival and they were meeting to come up with solutions on how they can revive the economy through infrastructure development.
The Conference Organising Team lined up various government officials as speakers at their conference to shed light on various issues affecting the economy. The congress was officially opened by the Vice-President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa on the 9th of November 2016.
Their parent Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere also graced the congress including the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Patrick Chinamasa, who both delivered speeches.
Advocate Jacob Mudenda, the Speaker of the National Assembly , was invited to highlight how Parliament can help with the issue of ease of doing business in the construction industry sector from a legislative point of view.
This came after the realisation that when the economy is in turmoil, the construction industry is usually the first to suffer and the last to recover.
Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Dr. Joram Gumbo was in attendance talking about the US$2 billion dualisation and rehabilitation of the topical Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu highway, which has been awarded to an Austrian firm Geiger International and opportunities local contractors could tap into, in the transport sector.
Reserve Bank Governor of Zimbabwe Dr. John Mangudya was lined up to talk about the Construction Sector Performance During The Dollarised Period: Looking Ahead. This also provided an opportunity for the Governor to disseminate about the introduction of Bond Notes to the economy.
Energy and Power Development Minister Dr. Samuel Undenge was lined up to speak on opportunities in the power projects, as Zimbabwe is currently rehabilitating power generation plants as well as building new ones across the country for thermal, hydro, diesel and solar energy.
The great infrastructure Indaba saw various groups in attendance including rural and urban councils, individuals, tertiary institutions, financial institutions, investment authority suppliers and service providers, quantity surveyors, engineers, ZBCA members, Government Officials and students in the built environment.
