The North Field South LNG expansion project continues progressing in 2026 as Qatar accelerates offshore and onshore construction linked to its long-term LNG export strategy. The project supports the landmark 27-year liquefied natural gas supply agreement signed between QatarEnergy and China’s Sinopec for annual deliveries of 3 million tonnes of LNG. Since the agreement was announced, QatarEnergy has advanced engineering, fabrication, offshore installation, and LNG processing works across the wider North Field expansion programme. The development remains central to Qatar’s ambition to strengthen its position as the world’s leading LNG exporter while expanding production capacity before 2030.
North Field South LNG Expansion Gains Momentum
Construction activities currently focus on offshore platforms, subsea pipelines, LNG trains, and export facilities at Ras Laffan Industrial City. QatarEnergy continues progressing multiple engineering and marine installation packages across North Field East and North Field South developments. Industry reports indicate that offshore fabrication campaigns and subsea infrastructure deployment remain active during 2026.
Meanwhile, North Field East is expected to begin production during 2026, while North Field South continues moving through advanced execution phases. Together, the developments aim to increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tonnes annually to 142 million tonnes annually by 2030. Consequently, the wider North Field expansion programme remains one of the world’s largest energy construction developments.
Sinopec Agreement Strengthens Long-Term Asian LNG Demand
The Sinopec supply agreement continues supporting long-term LNG demand growth across Asian markets. Under the partnership structure, Sinopec secured participation in part of the North Field South expansion through a joint venture arrangement with QatarEnergy. The agreement also strengthened energy cooperation between Qatar and China while improving long-term investment certainty for the wider project.
However, regional geopolitical tensions created temporary offshore logistics pressures across parts of the Gulf during early 2026. Despite this, QatarEnergy continues maintaining construction schedules across key expansion phases as operators target future export growth.
The wider North Field expansion programme is also driving competition among leading EPC contractors pursuing major offshore infrastructure packages. Global engineering firms continue bidding for platform fabrication, subsea installation, and offshore processing contracts linked to the world’s largest gas field. Several offshore development packages remain under active evaluation as QatarEnergy advances phased project delivery.
The LNG supply deal is part of Qatar’s prospect to achieve 40 percent of all LNG supplies by 2029. Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs said that Qatar’s government is in full support of the role of natural gas as a central component of any energy mix. The Minister added that Qatar is providing the world with the cleanest hydrocarbon source of energy. This will go a long way in providing immense benefits for the companies involved both environmentally and economically. Qatar has recorded a high profit in LNG supply due to the Russian-Ukrainian war that broke out earlier in the year.

Qatar’s LNG Supply Deals Improves Prospects for the North Field South Expansion Project
Qatar is the largest handler of LNG supply deals globally. This means that the country invests much of its resources in the production of LNG and its supply. Qatar’s earnings from its hydrocarbon accounts for more than 50% of the country’s revenue. One of the major investments the country is making in its LNG projects is the North Field Expansion. The project seeks to include six mega LNG trains which will ramp up Qatar’s liquefaction capacity to 126 mtpa. The 126 million tons per annum will account for a 64% increase in production. Qatar has the prospects to further boost its revenue and LNG income once the project takes shape.
