The Palisades Nuclear Project

The Palisades Nuclear Plant is an existing nuclear power facility in Michigan undergoing plans for recommissioning to restore electricity generation capacity. The project is intended to support baseload power supply within the state.

The U.S. Department of Energy has approved a $57 million loan disbursement to Holtec International as part of a broader loan guarantee of up to $1.52 billion for the project.

Once operational, the facility is expected to generate approximately 800 MW of electricity. According to project details, the restart would represent the first recommissioning of a commercial nuclear reactor that had previously ceased operations in the United States.

The project is also expected to support employment in Michigan, with estimates of up to 600 jobs being created or retained, including positions for workers previously employed at the plant.

Other Projects

Other than the Palisades nuclear plant, the VC Summer nuclear plant in South Carolina is also taking shape. After years of abandonment, $9bn+ VC Summer nuclear plant in South Carolina is scheduled for restart construction in recent updates. State-owned utility Santee Cooper says its plans is moving forward and employees are already on site. It comes as a reprieve for many South Carolinians who have been paying costs for the stalled project. However, utilities are currently working on a proposal that would allow global investment firm Brookfield Asset Management.  The firm is proposing a $2.7 billion buyout to step in and finish the project.

History on the Palisades Nuclear Plant

The Palisades Nuclear Plant was shut down in 2022 after the plant had been running for over 50 years. What led to the shut down was a glitch with a control rod, although it was already scheduled to be shut down by Entergy. Furthermore, the conditional loan guarantee was set up by the Biden administration to support nuclear energy. The Palisades disbursement is the second loan guarantee that has been given out, with the first being a US$38 million guarantee given in January.

Project Overview

Location: Covert Township, Michigan

Developers: Holtec

Former operators: Entergy

Capacity: 800 MW

The Palisades Nuclear Plant is now subject to US Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing approvals before Holtec can begin working on the plant in preparation for operations. “Unleashing American energy dominance will require leveraging all energy sources that are affordable, reliable and secure – including nuclear energy. Today’s action is yet another step toward advancing President Trump’s commitment to increase domestic energy production, bolster our security and lower costs for the American people,” said Secretary Wright.
