Zvenyika Chawatama, Director of works said that the city roads required immediate attention in terms repairs and rehabilitation. The tarring cost was at US $20m.
According to Zvenyika Chawatama, an assessment carried in 2017 revealed the need for repairs and rehabilitation, given that most of the roads had deteriorated in terms of ‘trafficability’. In this regard, Harare City is targeting to rehabilitate at least 250km of roads.
However, some of the roads have been completed while others are still undergoing rehabilitation including but not limited to George Road, Waterfalls Avenue, Highglen road, Aspindale, Bishop Gaul, among others. Meanwhile, rehabilitation work has been done and some of the work is still on course on Harare Drive.
Michael Chideme, City of Harare Corporate Communications Manager, stated that, the scale of city roads rehabilitation turned out to be much bigger than what the city used to do in the past.
“We have always done road rehabilitation, but what is different now is the scale at which we are doing the roads,” said Michael Chideme.

According to the Communications Manager, rehabilitation is done in both low and high density areas. These areas include Mbare, Budiriro along Aspindale Road, and Kambuzuma, among other areas in the city. Once all the Harare City roads are fully rehabilitated, more investments will be linked to the city.
Deplorable state roads
Most roads in Harare City are in a deplorable state with a common feature of potholes. Nevertheless, the road rehabilitation emergency fund from the government has enabled the city to commence some meaningful road rehabilitation works.
Currently, a total of US $17m has been pledged and so far over US $12m has been released to the City. Over 400km of roads with potholes have already been rehabilitated while 325km of road patching has been done.
