Meta has officially opened the $1.2bn Temple data center campus on Industrial Boulevard, a significant achievement. The facility, which broke ground in 2022 and underwent a redesign and construction restart in 2023, is now operational. The campus spans more than 760,000 square feet across two buildings. It also represents an investment of more than $1.2 billion once completed. Meta officials said the project supported more than 1,200 skilled trade workers on site at peak construction.

Furthermore, it currently supports nearly 100 operations roles. “$1.2 billion, it has supported 1,200 skilled construction workers at peak, and we also have 100 operation workers currently working within the site,” said Brad Davis, Meta’s director of global economic development. Meta said it has also invested in the surrounding community and Bell County. Davis announced a $400,000 grant at the opening event, part of $1.7 million in total direct funding the company has provided to Bell County-area schools and nonprofits.

Another major project is the Rubix data center project. The firm is eyeing the site for what is being deemed to be the largest data center project in the state. The developer, Rubix Data Centers, plans to build a campus on about 450 acres at the former AK Steel site near Ashland and Russell. Furthermore, it will have a power capacity of up to 2 gigawatts, enough electricity to power more than 1 million homes.

Outlook on the Temple Data Center by Meta

Meta has noted that its Temple data center is addressing community concerns about environmental impacts of data centers. All energy use at the facility is matched with 100% clean and renewable energy. It also said more than 40 Meta-supported projects are adding 9,000 megawatts of new clean and renewable energy across Texas. Davis said the company publishes annual sustainability reports detailing energy consumption and water use, with the next report due in the fall.

“We’re very transparent about our annual energy consumption as well as water withdrawals through our sustainability reports,” Davis said. “We’re also partnering with our local utilities to make sure we’re addressing the needs of the larger public.” Moreover, it has invested $8 million in local public water and wastewater infrastructure improvements. The company said it is also supporting a regional water conservation and restoration project aimed at returning 5.2 million gallons of water back into the local watershed annually by 2030.
