Amazon has announced plans to invest more than $100 million in an advanced manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana, where it will produce equipment for its fulfillment and robotics network across North America. The 585,000 square foot plant at 1175 Collins Road is expected to begin operations by 2028 and to employ 300 manufacturing and engineering staff on average salaries of close to $100,000 a year.
Amazon will purchase and equip an existing industrial building for the project rather than build from the ground up. The Amazon Greenwood facility sits across the road from the company’s fulfillment center near the Interstate 65 and Worthsville Road interchange, on the southeast side of the city. According to the governor’s office, the 300 jobs are expected to be in place by the end of 2028.
The announcement was made on September 24, 2026. In addition, it adds a manufacturing arm to a footprint in Indiana that has so far been built around warehousing, delivery and cloud computing.
Amazon Greenwood facility to bring fabrication and robotic welding under one roof
The Amazon Greenwood facility will combine advanced fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating and assembly within a single building. Amazon said these lines will run on smart manufacturing systems supported by Amazon Web Services, artificial intelligence and robotics.
At roughly 585,000 square feet, the plant offers about the same floor space as ten American football fields laid end to end, end zones included. Its output will be shipped to fulfillment centers across North America.
The workforce will include computer numerical control operators, welders, powder coating technicians and assemblers. Furthermore, the company plans to hire manufacturing engineers, controls engineers, quality assurance specialists and program managers.
Amazon has already built one of the world’s largest industrial robotics manufacturing operations at its sites in Massachusetts. The company says it has produced more than one million robots in the United States, and that those machines now work in over 300 facilities and help handle about three quarters of the customer orders it delivers worldwide.
Meanwhile, the Amazon Greenwood facility follows an August 2026 announcement of a separate robotics manufacturing investment in Texas. Together, the two projects signal a push to make more of the company’s own automation hardware on home soil.
Amazon Greenwood plant builds on $40 billion Indiana footprint
Amazon first arrived in Indiana in 2008 with a single fulfillment center. Since then, the company says it has invested more than $40 billion in the state and created more than 27,000 direct jobs, alongside an estimated 40,000 indirect jobs.
The company puts its contribution to Indiana’s gross domestic product at more than $35 billion. Its network in the state now spans 17 fulfillment and sortation centers, seven delivery stations and four super rural delivery stations. Moreover, it includes one wind farm, four solar farms and an AWS infrastructure region.
In Greenwood alone, Amazon already runs a warehouse, a fulfillment center and a hiring center. It also operates sites in nearby Whiteland and Franklin.
That build out has already leaned on materials made in Indiana. Low carbon concrete supplied by Ozinga cut embodied carbon by 64% at the AWS data center campus in New Carlisle, according to the supplier. Ozinga’s own supply chain bet is now close to delivery, with Ozinga’s low carbon cement manufacturing facility in East Chicago reported to be nearing completion in April 2026 and scheduled to start operations in summer 2026. Once running, the mill is designed to produce about one million tons of low carbon cementitious materials a year.
Greenwood and state officials back Amazon manufacturing investment
Amazon said it chose Greenwood for its manufacturing workforce, cost structure, logistics links and business climate. Indiana is the country’s leading manufacturing state by share of output, with the sector generating around 24% of state GDP and employing more than 518,000 people.
Also, the region produces more than 2,500 industrial engineering graduates a year from institutions including Purdue University, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and Ivy Tech Community College. Indiana’s transport infrastructure is ranked 13th in the country, giving the plant direct reach into Amazon’s continental network.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun described the investment as proof of the strength of the state’s workforce and infrastructure. “Indiana has always been a state that builds things,” he said.
Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers said 300 skilled jobs at close to $100,000 a year is “exactly the kind of opportunity we want to see.” Likewise, Amanda Rubadue, vice president of economic development at Aspire Economic Development + Chamber Alliance, said the project fits the goals of Johnson County’s new economic development strategy on higher wages and advanced manufacturing.
Indiana Secretary of Commerce Chuck Goodrich said the plant would strengthen the state’s advanced manufacturing sector. Holly Sullivan, vice president of economic development at Amazon, said the median salary at the facility would sit well above the regional average.
Workforce training forms part of the package. Since 2019, more than 4,200 Amazon employees in Indiana have used the company’s Career Choice program, which prepays tuition through 32 education partners across the state. Details of any state or local incentives tied to the Amazon Greenwood facility have not been publicly disclosed.
