The Al Hada gas plant project, valued at more than $10 billion, is approaching a major procurement milestone in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Aramco is preparing three engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) tender packages for the large-scale gas processing development. The company could issue the key tender documents as early as December 2026.
The procurement program will cover essential gas treatment facilities, sulphur recovery infrastructure and supporting utilities. Consequently, the upcoming tenders will open another significant construction opportunity for international engineering and contracting companies. The development also supports Saudi Arabia’s expanding natural gas infrastructure and long-term energy diversification strategy.
Al Hada Gas Plant Project prepares three construction packages
Saudi Aramco has already initiated preliminary procurement activities for the Al Hada development. In September 2026, the company invited contractors to express interest in participating in the main tendering exercise. Interested companies submitted their responses by September 17, according to industry sources cited by MEED.
Furthermore, Aramco divided the EPC construction scope into three principal packages. Each package addresses a different component of the integrated gas processing complex.
The first package covers the main gas treatment facilities. It includes three processing trains, three acid gas removal units and a triethylene glycol (TEG) dehydration unit.
Additionally, contractors will undertake associated flare infrastructure. This includes two high-pressure and two low-pressure flares, alongside two flare gas recovery units. The package also includes two T&I flares, two burn pits and a digital twin.
The acid gas removal units will separate hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide from incoming sour gas. This process will produce sales gas and acid-gas feed for downstream treatment.
Meanwhile, the dehydration system will remove moisture from treated gas. This will help the facility achieve the required sales-gas specifications.
The second package focuses on sulphur recovery units (SRUs). These facilities will process acid gas generated during the treatment process. They will recover sulphur while supporting the wider plant’s environmental and operational requirements.
The third package covers monoethylene glycol (MEG) inlet channels, common utilities and supporting infrastructure. These installations will provide essential connections and services for the processing complex.
Therefore, the three packages will combine process equipment, environmental treatment systems and supporting construction works.
Al Hada Gas Plant Project supports Saudi Arabia’s gas expansion
The Al Hada development forms part of Saudi Aramco’s broader strategy to increase domestic natural gas production. The company targets an 80% increase in gas production capacity by 2030, compared with its 2021 baseline.
Consequently, additional processing infrastructure will play an important role in accommodating increased gas output. The project will also strengthen the Kingdom’s ability to supply industrial facilities and power generation infrastructure.
The proposed development sits within Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, approximately 85 kilometers northwest of Jubail. This location places the facility within an established industrial and energy development corridor.
Moreover, the project reflects growing investment in gas processing infrastructure across the Kingdom. Aramco continues to advance several major developments supporting its expanding gas portfolio.
For example, the Fadhili Gas Plant expansion received EPC contracts worth $7.7 billion in April 2024. The project will increase processing capacity from 2.5 billion to four billion standard cubic feet daily. Samsung Engineering, GS Engineering & Construction and Nesma & Partners received the contracts.
However, the Fadhili expansion represents a separate development. Its construction program should not be confused with the forthcoming Al Hada tender packages.
Al Hada Gas Plant Project enters the contractor procurement phase
The anticipated December 2026 tender release will move the Al Hada development closer to its main construction procurement phase. Contractors will have an opportunity to compete for substantial process engineering and infrastructure works.
However, Aramco has not publicly confirmed the successful EPC bidders for the three packages. The forthcoming tender documents should provide further details about technical requirements, commercial conditions and implementation schedules.
The procurement exercise will also attract attention from international engineering companies with experience in large-scale gas processing facilities. In particular, the treatment and sulphur recovery packages require specialised process engineering capabilities.
Meanwhile, the utilities and supporting infrastructure package will create opportunities for contractors experienced in industrial construction. The successful bidders will eventually coordinate complex equipment installation and supporting works.
The project remains an important component of Saudi Arabia’s long-term gas infrastructure investment program. Its next milestone will be the formal release of the three EPC tender documents.
Saudi Arabia’s expanding gas infrastructure also supports its growing electricity generation capacity. The Kingdom is advancing major gas-fired power developments, including the $3.6 billion Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (QIPP) expansion project, which will add approximately 3,000MW through combined-cycle technology. Together, these developments highlight the growing construction demand for gas processing, power generation and associated energy infrastructure.
