$1B Sun Family Campus: Hoag Hospital Completes Irvine Expansion

Hoag Hospital Irvine has completed a $1 billion, six building expansion that more than doubles the campus’s patient capacity. Named the Sun Family Campus after principal donors Diana and David Sun, the project adds 155 inpatient beds, bringing the hospital’s total to 251, alongside 11 new operating rooms and two procedure rooms.

Designed by LPA Design Studios, the new buildings sit around landscaped gardens on Sand Canyon Avenue and are interconnected so patients can move between diagnosis, treatment and recovery within the same space. Furthermore, Hoag operates two hospitals in Orange County, and the Irvine campus is now positioned as its larger acute care site alongside the original Newport Beach facility.

Sun Family Campus Adds Cancer, Women’s Health and Digestive Care Facilities

The expansion covers roughly 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities, plus dedicated pavilions for cancer, women’s health, digestive health and augmented surgical care. Additionally, the project expands the hospital’s emergency department, inpatient medical care and orthopedic institute.

A new women’s hospital includes a 24 hour OB emergency department and a 17 bed Level III NICU, while a separate cancer urgent care clinic gives patients same day access outside a standard oncology visit. Consequently, the campus can now manage a broader range of acute conditions on site rather than referring patients elsewhere.

Hoag board chair Robert Brunswick said the team built the campus “around the patient experience from the ground up.” The buildings’ natural light and garden orientation reflect that same brief, extending into how patients and families move between departments.

California Health Systems Are Racing to Add Beds Across the Bay Area and Orange County

Hoag’s finished expansion contrasts with a similarly sized project still working through the planning stage further north. Sutter Health’s $1 billion East Bay campus in Emeryville has grown since it was first announced in February 2025. Sutter’s updated plans, filed with the city in 2026, now call for a 17 story, 785,000 square foot hospital with 325 beds, up from the 200 beds originally proposed, designed by SmithGroup.

Moreover, Sutter’s timeline sits well behind Hoag’s: construction on Emeryville’s main tower is not expected to begin until 2029, with completion targeted for 2033, when the campus is meant to replace acute care services at Sutter’s aging Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley. In the meantime, a separate $400 million Stanford Medicine Sutter Health Cancer Center on the same Emeryville site is nearing completion and is due to open in November 2026.
