The project advances from the ground-level development, which until recently was all the client company, SK Hynix was permitted to work on. This ground-level work started in April with roughly 200 workers installing concrete and steel as part of the piling process needed to stabilize the foundation. Moreover, the project’s advancements is being fueled by demand for specialized chips that the plant aims to produce once operational.

However, despite advancements, there has been backlash to the plant’s location on residential developments. Lawsuits have been filed against the local decision to rezone the area for industrial use but the project is still advancing. Moreover, despite construction starting this spring, trial dates have been set for December when opponents will argue to under the zoning decision. Other chip making facilities that are expected to help meet chip demands in the U.S include Intel’s Ohio One plant which still seems to be trying to find a footing to commence construction.

Despite setbacks, the SK Hynix chip manufacturing plant in West Lafayette is advancing as the city backs the project. The firm has received a permit to construct the facility’s structure and the city continues to make infrastructure upgrades as the company aims for production to commence in 2028. The plant is among at least nine that SK Hynix has in development or under construction, most in South Korea. However, they are all aimed at fulfilling the growing demand for advanced computing, especially AI. SK Hynix is set to receive $458 million in grants and up to $570 million in loans from the CHIPS and Science Act. Final amounts will however be based on the company’s performance. The 2022 law aims to bring more semiconductor manufacturing to the U.S. with a variety of tools including $39 billion in manufacturing grants
