PIF5 Wind Complex in Saudi Arabia

The 3GW PIF5 wind complex in Saudi Arabia is advancing as Goldwind ships out the project’s first batch of turbine components. The company noted in a social media post that it marks a key step in the PIF5 project’s progress. The project is seeking to advance into the installation phase as it aims to advance on the scheduled timeline. It is being developed by Riyadh-based ACWA Power in partnership with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and also Saudi Aramco.

The shipments include 12 sets of mains as well as nine sets of blades and lifting equipment. It was originally planned via the Strait of Hormuz but the route was changed in coordination with ACWA Power and other partners. The vessel was rerouted through the Strait of Malacca, Babel-Mandeb and the Red Sea to a west coast port in Saudi Arabia.

Scope of Implementation on the PIF5 Wind Complex in Saudi Arabia

The shipment by Goldwind on the PIF5 wind complex in Saudi Arabia marks a critical step in the project’s implementation. Goldwind is supplying GWH204-10MW turbines with enhanced sealing against high temperatures and sandstorms for the development. It is also supplying 148-meter steel-concrete hybrid towers. The company’s local hybrid tower factory is already in full operation.

The Chinese company announced the supply deal for the PIF5 wind project in October 2025. The scheme includes the 1-GW Shaqra and also the 2-GW Starah projects. Once completed, the PIF5 wind complex is expected to generate 11.3 billion kWh a year.

This represents 2.4% of Saudi Arabia’s electricity generation in 2024, Goldwind said. To optimize logistics and promote domestic industrial growth, Goldwind is establishing a local hybrid tower precast factory in Saudi Arabia, which is also tasked with handling ongoing operations and maintenance (O&M) for the full lifecycle of the turbines. Other recently completed wind projects in Saudi Arabia include the Al Ghat wind power project which saw the first turbine connected to the nation’s power grid.
