The airport site has a long aviation history. Established in 1943, it served as an operational base for the South African Air Force before moving into private ownership in 1993. In 2020, RSA Aero acquired the property and unveiled plans for a comprehensive redevelopment program designed to create a new international gateway for the Western Cape.
The project extends beyond airport infrastructure. Developers plan to establish a large aviation-linked precinct that combines commercial, industrial, logistics, and hospitality facilities. The Cape Winelands Airport Project recently achieved several milestones that strengthen its path toward construction. Most notably, authorities granted final environmental authorization after considering all appeals submitted during the approval process.
Environmental approvals represented the most significant obstacle facing the development. According to project stakeholders, securing the necessary environmental clearances required nearly five years of assessments, consultations, and regulatory reviews.
In addition, the City of Cape Town Municipal Planning Tribunal approved the rezoning application for the airport precinct. The approval covers approximately 350,000 square meters of development bulk and supports the wider mixed-use vision for the site.
The project also received Strategic Integrated Project 17 status from Infrastructure South Africa. This designation places the development among nationally significant infrastructure projects and requires government agencies to prioritize related approvals, licenses, authorizations, and exemptions.

Therefore, the project aims to create a sustainable environment that supports businesses operating within the aviation, logistics, tourism, and commercial sectors.
Developers believe the precinct will strengthen the Western Cape’s position as a regional business destination. Furthermore, the project could unlock substantial private-sector investment while supporting infrastructure expansion across the surrounding area.
