The Cross River Rail project is a major transport infrastructure development in Brisbane, Australia, designed to improve rail capacity and connectivity across the city. The project includes the construction and fit-out of twin rail tunnels beneath the Brisbane River.

Cross River Rail has progressed to the tunnel fit-out stage, which involves the installation of essential systems within the underground infrastructure. According to project updates, approximately 180 workers are currently engaged in these activities, including the installation of cables, pipes, and emergency walkways.

The tunnel works include the placement of extensive cabling to support rail operations. To date, around 18 kilometres of feeder cables have been installed to enable communication systems within the tunnels. The installed systems are intended to support train signalling, operational communications, and mobile network coverage once the rail line becomes operational.

As of 2026, the 10.2km Cross River Rail project in Brisbane is experiencing significant delays and cost escalations. The opening is also now expected in 2029 and costs estimated at $17–$19 billion. Despite these challenges, construction continues on the 5.9km twin tunnels, four new underground stations (Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, Roma Street), and surface station upgrades.

Other Project

Other than Australia’s Cross River project, the Beleaguered Inland Rail project is also facing a controversy of its own. The $45bn+ Beleaguered inland rail project connecting NSW with Queensland has been abandoned by the Albanese government. The project will be significantly scaled back as the price tag blows out to more than earlier purported. Originally envisioned to run 1,700km from Melbourne to a port near Brisbane, this has been scrapped off. Conversely, the new scale will now only connect Beveridge, on the outskirts of Melbourne, to Parkes in central-west New South Wales (NSW).

Australia’s Cross River Rail Project Magnitude And Cost

As a whole, the Australian Government revealed the underground heavy rail network development will cost $960 million. By early 2024, the majority of the tunnel’s fit-out work will be complete. It will have 16 cross passages, serving as a link to the twin tunnels. The passages will be equipped with smoke detectors, speakers, and cameras. In addition to lights and emergency phones.

Furthermore, the cross passages will connect the development’s train tunnels every 240 meters. The strategic function design is said to allow people to move from one tunnel to the next, with maximum safety. Thereafter, the project schedules to carry out extensive testing and commissioning. Upon successful test runs, it will then be open to the public in the first quarter of 2026.

Currently, cable and walkway installation is  moving closer to official  completion. As per the project timeline, the installation of an overhead electrical system is next in line. The system will supply and provide power to trains traveling through the tunnel.

While commenting on the rail development project, Queensland Transport, and Main Roads Minister noted that it strives to achieve reliable and safe operation. Mark Bailey further assured that efforts are underway toward fusing all of the project’s complex systems. The Minister also commended the transformative development workers towards actualizing the network.
