The construction of a new US$1.3 billion UCI Health Complex and other associated facilities on approximately 202 acres piece of land the UC Irvine campus is currently underway. Developed on the on the northern edge of the campus, across University Drive, the project will add a second full-service hospital to UC Irvine’s Orange County health care offerings.

The project entails the construction of Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building – a 225,000-square-foot facility for cancer care as well as an adult hematopoietic stem cell/bone marrow transplant program, the UCI Health Center for Advanced Care – a 168,000-square-foot complex for adult primary and specialty care services, laboratory and radiology facilities, imaging, and urgent care; and the Center for Children’s Health.

Proposed UCI Health Complex at UC Irvine Campus amenities

The UCI Health Complex at UC Irvine Campus would contain Langson IMCA’s landmark California art collection, which comprises over 4,500 items from the Irvine Museum and Buck collections, which are presently on display at the interim museum on 18881 Von Karman Ave., as well as numerous pop-up locations and campus galleries. A new parking structure with room for 1,400 automobiles is also being built.

Speaking during the projects groundbreaking ceremony, Steve A.N. Goldstein, UCI’s vice chancellor for health affairs said “We are establishing a new commitment to wellness and excellent healthcare for all members of our community, which will help enhance how care is given well beyond our borders. We will soon open this new medical complex in stages, and each step will be another sign of the longstanding UCI Health mission to improve the well-being of individuals and communities through this virtuous cycle – discover, teach, heal – a process that promises continuous improvement in care and a healthier tomorrow for all.

With CO Architects as the contractor, and Hensel Phelps as the general contractor the UCI Health Complex at UC Irvine Campus is expected to open in phases between early 2023 and 2025.
