The Nationwide Arena rebuild project is advancing despite a significant funding gap threatening the $400 million project’s completion timeline. The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority has scheduled a 2031 completion date, despite the fact that a significant portion of the estimated $400 million needed has yet to be secured. The Nationwide Arena will be rebuilt to become the Blue Jackets‘ home arena, which was built 25 years ago for $175 million. In the meantime, the increasing costs are compelling authorities to proceed with planning and preliminary work.
Despite funding concerns, Ken Paul, executive director of the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority, confirmed the project timeline. In particular, the $400 million rebuild of the Nationwide Arena is over double the original construction cost of the arena complex. So there are critical decisions to be made by authorities regarding phased implementation to keep the momentum going.
The Continental Colosseum by the OKC Thunders is also taking shape in fine style based on recent renderings. As a result, the latest photos show significant progress in the structure towards the planned opening in 2028. The arena is being built on the downtown block between Reno Avenue, Ron Norick Boulevard, Sheridan Avenue and E.K. Gaylord Boulevard. Meanwhile, the facility will replace Paycom Center, which will be 26 years old upon the Continental Coliseum’s completion.
Nationwide Arena Rebuild Funding Strategy Remains Uncertain
The state of Ohio is expected to contribute up to $100 million and the Nationwide Arena will need over $100 million in authority-issued bonds to fund the rebuild. In addition, Columbus and Franklin County have each pledged $25 million for the project. Also, private investors such as the Blue Jackets ownership would provide the rest of the money to fill the gap. But Ohio is still embroiled in a lawsuit regarding the release of almost $5 billion in unclaimed money. This means that the $100 million state contribution is still up in the air, which could impact the project’s scope and timeline. Paul said, “We have to get started, we can’t wait any longer.
Nationwide Arena Rebuild Proceeds with Deferred Components
The Nationwide Arena rebuild would only fund the first phase of schematic design without the $100 million in state funds. In particular, Paul estimates that this initial phase would cost $5-10 million, and that more time should be spent on the remaining planning. Furthermore, significant renovations such as new seating, scoreboard, concession, luxury suites and a new parking garage would be postponed until they can be funded.
The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority has negotiated with Columbus an increase in the arena event admissions tax from 5% to 7%. Furthermore, the authority started to collect the 2% increase for project use in July 2026. Thus, local revenue mechanisms offer some financial support until state funding is secured.
