The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has just recently brought to light its plans for the construction of 1.6 kilometer Al Khaleej Street Tunnel that will have six lanes in Diera. This tunnel is expected to serve a capacity of 12,000 vehicles in a day and is indeed a key part of the multi-billion dirham initiative that foresees to boost the flow of traffic and make sure that the roads of the emirate are able to meet the demands of the rapidly increasing population of the area.

The Roads and Transport Authority made an announcement on Sunday that revealed that a contract had been awarded that would foresee the construction of the transport link. The tunnel will be stretching from the end of the ramp of Infinity Bridge in deira all the way to the junction of Al Khaleej and streets of Cairo.

Opening Date of the Al Khaleej Street Tunnel

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority did not give information on when the Al Khaleej Street Tunnel would be opened. This project is the latest addition to the $1.44 billion Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which comprises of a 13km area comprising of Sheikh Rashid Road, the Al Mina Street, the Al Khaleej Street, and lastly the Cairo Street.

Additionally, the project will also include the upgrade of a total of 15 intersections and has an aim of benefiting around 1 million people that dwell in Dubai Islands, the Dubai Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City, and even Mina Rashid.

“The Al Khaleej Street Tunnel project is part of the Phase 4 of the Al Shindagha project and it covers the establishment of a tunnel that extends a distance of 1,650 meters comprising of 3 lanes in each of the directions”, stated Mattar Al Tayer, who is holds the position of director general of RTA.

Significance of the Project

“The project will provide free flow of traffic from the Infinity Bridge heading towards Deira and back. This project will serve the people who stay in Abu Hail, Al Wuheida, and also Al Mamzar along with the projects of Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfont, the Waterfront Market, and even the Hamriya Port.”

In the month of March 2023, RTA awarded the very first contract which was under the Phase 4 of the Al Shindagha masterplan.

 

The project which cost Dh800 million extends a distance of 4.8 kilometer along the Sheikh Rashid Road, running from the intersection with the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street all the way to the Falcon Interchange at Al Mina Road.

The project involves the construiction of a total of 3 bridges which will all span a distance of 3.1 kilometeres and the the capacity to accommodate up to 19,400 vehicles hourly across all the lanes.

The other improvements that have been finished under this major infrastructure project include the opening of the intersection of Sheikh Rashid Road and the Oud Metha Road, and also launching of a total of 5 bridges which head to Dubai Islands, which together have the capacity of accommodating over 20,000 vehicles in an hour.
