Plans are underway for a US$ 338M expansion of Tema Motorway and Nsawam and Dzorwulu roads in a bid to revolutionise the road sector in Accra.
The 36-month project if approved will involve the expansion of the Tema Motorway to 10 lanes, while the N1 will be expanded to six lanes on each side. Other ancillary works in the project include interchanges at Dzorwulu, Achimota, and Neoplan.
Scope of the Tema Motorway and Nsawam and Dzorwulu roads expansion project
The project will reportedly be divided into three sections. The first section is the 19.5 kilometres Accra-Tema motorway. The scope of this project will involve the rehabilitation and expansion of a minimum of 10 lanes on the motorway.

The project will also involve the reconstruction of the Tetteh Quarshie interchange, the construction of the Teshie link interchange and the community 18-foot interchange. Furthermore, it will involve the construction of Lashibi interchange, eight toll booth plazas, 10 new footbridges as well as enhancement of road traffic in Tema, Lagos.
The first section of the Tema Motorway and Nsawam and Dzorwulu roads expansion project will also involve the construction of the Lagos Avenue link and Accra North of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange. Liberia road to the polo club, overpass to the polo club and South of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange will also be rebuilt as part of this section.
In total, this phase of the project will lead to the improvement of 27.7 kilometres of road.
The second and third phases of the proposed Tema Motorway and Nsawam and Dzorwulu roads expansion project
The second section or other phase of the proposed project involves the improvement of N1. It will also involve the improvement of 5.7 kilometres of George Walker Bush High Way and the rehabilitation and widening of a 12-lane road. Additionally, this phase of the Tema Motorway and Nsawam and Dzorwulu roads expansion project will involve the construction of an interchange at Dzorwulu, two toll plazas, and two new footbridges.
The final and third phase of the project on the other hand will involve the rehabilitation of the existing six-lane Nsawam road, roads in Tesano, Achimota Interchange Apenkwa interchange, and the construction of the Neoplan interchange
Maripoma Limited and Ghana Infrasture Fund are some of the companies that will be involved in the Tema Motorway and Nsawam and Dzorwulu roads expansion projects.
