Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in South Florida is set to receive a significant upgrade with the start of construction on a new terminal, marking the first such development in decades. The ambitious $404-million project, led by JetBlue Airways Corp., promises to usher in a new era of air travel for the bustling airport.

JetBlue, a major player at the airport and the second-largest carrier at FLL, has assembled a top-tier team to ensure the success of this venture. Parsons has been appointed as the program manager, M. Arthur Gensler & Associates will provide design services, KEITH will serve as the construction engineer inspector, and Hunt/Moss will take on the role of construction manager at risk.

Broward County Mayor Lamar P. Fisher celebrated the start of the new terminal construction, saying, “It’s a great day for FLL as the Aviation Department and its development partners break ground on the airport’s brand-new Terminal 5. I look forward to the positive ripple effects of having another airport terminal for travelers to enjoy as they travel to and from their domestic destinations.”

Terminal 5, or T5, will feature two levels and five gates dedicated to domestic travel. Upon its completion, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will boast a total of 71 gates, catering to the growing number of travelers.

The Broward County Aviation Department, the airport’s owner, recently disclosed that the Terminal 5 (T5) project is expected to be completed within the next three years. In a mutually beneficial agreement between Broward County and JetBlue, the latter will oversee the construction of T5 on behalf of the county.

The funding for this monumental construction project has been procured from a combination of sources, including airport bonds, grants from the Florida Department of Transportation, and passenger facility charges.

Start new terminal construction at Fort Lauderdale Airport is part of the FLL Master Plan, which aims to meet the increasing demands of airlines and passengers in the years to come. With expectations of nearly 52 million annual passengers within the next two decades, the airport is gearing up for substantial growth.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, JetBlue’s President and COO, Joanna Geraghty, spoke optimistically about the expansion. She noted that this strategic move would allow the airline to reach over 250 daily departures by 2027, following its planned merger with Spirit Airlines. The future of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is taking off, and T5 is set to play a pivotal role in its continued success.
