UK-based Mace has provided remarkable insight into its multimillion-dollar project on Heathrow Airport’s cargo tunnel. The company noted that it will install the last module in the lining of Heathrow Airport’s 870m cargo tunnel under its runways. The project is a multimillion-dollar endeavor with a budget of £145M for the renewal project. Details about the work were revealed in a video from the construction and consultancy company, which has been working on Heathrow’s New Engineering Contract (NEC).
However, despite being called a cargo tunnel, it is used by many vehicles for many different purposes. One of Mace’s spokespersons noted that the project is fundamental as it serves many purposes in the airport. “When the tunnel was first built in the 1960s it was designed to link the Cargo Area to the Central Terminal Area (CTA), which was Terminal 1, 2 & 3,” he noted. “In the 1980s, Terminal 4 was built and instead of building a new tunnel dedicated to passenger transfers the airport decided to use the existing Cargo Tunnel.”

Implementing Heathrow Airport’s cargo tunnel is expected to be a viable endeavor, especially with Mace as its main contractor. The company is working closely with Mace MEP, which the spokesperson described as the company’s “own internal MEP sub-contractor.” This demonstrates “the benefits of vertical supply chain integration.” Moreover, sub-contractors are involved in the project, such as Chisholm & Winch, Keltbray, Deane Roofing, and Tone for scaffolding. It also includes DBI for traffic barriers and LDD for fire stopping.
According to Mace, 160 people are working on the project, including managers, engineers, planners, and trained/skilled tradespeople. Furthermore, the project is expected to commence steadily, though no completion date has yet been communicated. Work has already commenced, as shown in the video on the various activities being undertaken in the tunnel. One of the aspects is how the narrator draws viewers’ attention to work on installing panels as part of the lining of the tunnel.

Heathrow Airport’s cargo tunnel is expected to have much more to offer once Mace completes its renewal. One of the significant aspects that Mace is leveraging is reducing greenhouse gas emissions through offsite production. In the video, Mace said it fabricates modules off-site and cites a subsequent 22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. “The use of offsite assembly methods was necessary to improve delivery. It’s how we have improved productivity,” said the spokesperson. “At Mace we look at how we can use a more ‘industrialized’ approach to construction – something we call ‘Construction to Production’ – to radically reduce program time by months.” Such endeavors are commendable in ensuring the viability and timely delivery of the project. Furthermore, it ensures that the tunnel will be beneficial to the airport and its users upon completion. “Through adopting this approach we were able to achieve 5,000,000 kgCO2e of carbon savings.”
