American technology company Cybastion is planning a $75 million investment in an AI-powered data center and power plant in Cameroon. This adds fresh momentum to the country’s drive to strengthen its digital infrastructure. Also, it is part of Cameroon’s efforts to attract greater U.S. investment into the technology sector.
The planned investment was announced by the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon on August 27 during the inaugural U.S.-Cameroon Bilateral Economic and Commercial Dialogue, which brought together government officials and private-sector leaders to explore opportunities for stronger trade and investment ties between the two countries.
Part of a Broader Pipeline
Cybastion’s project was among approximately $7 billion in new and expanding American investment and trade opportunities highlighted during the dialogue. The broader pipeline spans technology, critical minerals, infrastructure, energy, forestry and logistics, reflecting growing U.S. commercial interest in Cameroon and its potential as a gateway to the wider Central African market.
For Cameroon, the proposed Cybastion project could be an important addition to a digital economy that is expanding but still faces infrastructure and energy constraints. Data centers require dependable electricity, strong connectivity and robust security, making the combination of an AI-powered facility and dedicated power infrastructure particularly significant.
The investment also comes as demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and locally hosted digital services continues to grow across Africa. Leading the regional charge, Nigeria and Ghana are expanding their cloud and data capacity through major public-private partnerships, driven by hyper-scale operators like Africa Data Centres and strategic international backing aimed at building AI-ready infrastructure platforms. Across Francophone West Africa, countries like Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire are modernizing regulatory frameworks, enforcing strict local data sovereignty laws, and partnering with global technology investors to secure captive energy and landing facilities for submarine cables.
