Dangote Refinery AI Expansion

The Dangote Refinery AI Expansion program has achieved a major technological milestone following the official launch of an advanced industrial artificial intelligence system at its flagship industrial complex in Lekki, Nigeria.

Honeywell Technologies formally announced the deployment of its proprietary Forge Plant Cognition platform across the petroleum refining facility.

This artificial intelligence system is designed to analyze real-time operational data, identify complex production bottlenecks, predict equipment wear, and provide process guidance to plant engineers.

This major industrial milestone builds upon foundational engineering frameworks previously detailed in Dangote Oil Refinery in Nigeria, Africa’s Largest of its Kind, which documented the initial design phases, mega-scale single-train configurations, and core structural milestones of the landmark petroleum complex.

Scaling Operations Through the Dangote Refinery AI Expansion

The integration of the Forge Plant Cognition system represents the first global commercial deployment of Honeywell’s industrial artificial intelligence architecture.

Unlike general-purpose conversational software or basic automated monitoring tools, this platform combines deep chemical process engineering knowledge with physics-based modeling and high-performance neural computing.Dangote Refinery AI Expansion

The digital ecosystem incorporates specialized artificial intelligence models developed by NVIDIA, alongside high-density accelerated computing hardware provided by Dell Technologies.

Through these integrated tools, refinery engineers can run high-fidelity digital-twin simulations using NVIDIA Omniverse software libraries. These digital twins mirror physical unit operations, allowing technicians to model thermal stress, fluid dynamics, and catalyst degradation without risking physical plant disruption.

Preliminary performance modeling conducted by software engineers indicates that AI-assisted optimization could yield substantial financial returns. Honeywell estimates that the platform could generate approximately $0.29 in gross operational value per barrel of crude oil processed.

When the mega-refinery achieves its full production throughput, these incremental gains could accumulate to more than $60 million in gross annual operational benefits.

Company representatives emphasized that this figure represents an estimated operational benefit rather than a guaranteed net profit margin, as final returns depend on crude oil feedstock quality, regional fuel margins, and hardware maintenance schedules.

To ensure seamless integration with physical infrastructure, engineers linked the software platform directly into the facility’s legacy distributed control systems.

Operational insights generated by the system are dispatched to control rooms, offering step-by-step recommendations during production shifts. This continuous digital coaching aligns directly with the refinery’s corporate directive to achieve a 70% Nigerian representation across its engineering workforce.

By providing local technicians with automated process intelligence, the platform accelerates technical skills transfer and reduces reliance on external engineering consultants.

Structural Capital Allocations and Future Infrastructure Targets

  1. Massive Throughput Scaling: The physical expansion initiative aims to increase crude refining capacity from the current installed nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day to an unprecedented 1.4 million barrels per day.
  2. Capital Expenditure Commitment: Company filings and project disclosures indicate that the broader physical infrastructure upgrade carries an estimated investment value of $14.3 billion.
  3. East African Regional Strategy: In addition to the Nigerian deployment, Honeywell has been selected to provide process engineering evaluations for a proposed mega-refinery complex in Lamu County, Kenya.

The broader physical expansion initiative entails extensive civil and mechanical engineering operations across the Lekki industrial park.

Heavy construction crews are adding secondary crude distillation units, expanding fluid catalytic cracking capacity, and building specialized storage tank farms.

Furthermore, the site expansion incorporates dedicated industrial facilities to scale polypropylene and petrochemical derivative output, positioning the complex as a central energy hub for West Africa.
