Dean Moor Solar Farm construction has secured a major milestone after the UK government approved the 700-acre renewable energy project in Cumbria. The development consent order allows construction to begin on the 150MW solar farm near the villages of Gilgarran and Branthwaite. Work will take between 18 months and two years, while the completed facility will generate enough electricity to power more than 50,000 homes. Industry estimates place the investment at about $210 million, based on current UK utility-scale solar construction costs.

The project forms part of Britain’s wider strategy to strengthen energy security through domestic renewable generation. Government officials approved the scheme after reviewing its environmental, planning and community impacts under the Development Consent Order process. The approval also marks another step toward expanding the UK’s clean energy portfolio while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Dean Moor Solar Farm will occupy approximately 691 acres of land west of the A5086 near Workington. Although solar panels will cover much of the site, agricultural grazing will continue throughout the project’s planned 40-year operational life. This dual-use approach aims to balance renewable energy production with ongoing agricultural activity.

The facility will have an installed generation capacity of 150MW. Electricity produced on site will connect to Electricity North West’s transmission network before entering the regional grid. Consequently, the project will strengthen local electricity supplies while supporting Britain’s clean energy targets.

Construction activities will include site preparation, internal access roads, mounting structures, photovoltaic panel installation, inverter stations, underground cabling, drainage systems and landscape mitigation works. Contractors will also develop grid connection infrastructure before commissioning begins.

The approval reflects the UK government’s continued support for nationally significant renewable infrastructure. Officials noted that solar power remains one of the country’s lowest-cost electricity sources while helping improve long-term energy resilience. The decision followed detailed examinations covering ecology, visual impacts, land use, transport and local consultation.

The government has accelerated approvals for nationally significant clean energy developments since 2024. Dean Moor Solar Farm joins several major renewable projects approved during the current Parliament. Together, these developments aim to increase domestic electricity generation while supporting the country’s legally binding net-zero commitments.

Project developers also plan biodiversity enhancements across the site. These measures include new hedgerows, woodland planting, habitat management and ecological monitoring throughout construction and operation. Furthermore, existing grazing practices will continue beneath and around the solar arrays where practical.

Site mobilisation could begin after developers satisfy the remaining planning conditions attached to the consent order. Early activities will focus on surveys, temporary facilities, access improvements and environmental protection measures. Main civil works will then progress in phases before mechanical and electrical installation begins.

During construction, the project will create employment opportunities for contractors, engineers, equipment suppliers and specialist installers. Local businesses may also benefit through logistics, accommodation, plant hire and supporting services. Once operational, the facility will require a smaller permanent workforce responsible for maintenance, monitoring and asset management.

Dean Moor Solar Farm also demonstrates the growing role of large-scale solar developments within Britain’s evolving electricity mix. As electricity demand increases through transport electrification and industrial decarbonisation, projects of this scale will help diversify generation sources while improving long-term grid reliability.

It also joins a growing pipeline of utility-scale renewable developments across Britain. The approval complements other major investments, including Enso Energy’s 1GW solar plants and battery storage pipeline across the UK, which continues to expand the country’s renewable generation capacity through large-scale solar and energy storage projects.
