Duane Arnold Energy Center Restart: NextEra Secures $1.9B Loan for Iowa Nuclear Plant

Iowa’s only nuclear power plant is on track to turn back on after securing a massive federal financial commitment. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Dominance Financing announced Tuesday the financial close of a loan of up to $1.9 billion to NextEra Energy. The funding  designated will help restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo.

Furthermore, the investment aims to bring the 615-megawatt plant back online, aligning with federal efforts to reinvigorate the nation’s nuclear industrial base and secure reliable baseload energy. Once operational, the plant will generate enough electricity to power nearly 500,000 homes across Iowa and the Midwest.

Economic Impact

Additionally, beyond adding substantial power back to the regional grid, local officials expect a significant economic boost. The restart project is projected to create nearly 1,500 jobs during the construction phase. Moreover, once fully online, the plant will support more than 450 permanent operational jobs.

Returning 615 megawatts of reliable baseload generation will drive down electricity costs, while supporting thousands of American jobs,” said U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy James P. Danly.

Duane Arnold originally ended operations in 2020. While the multi-billion dollar financing is now closed, the plant cannot immediately return to service. NextEra Energy must first obtain the necessary licensing approvals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

A finalized timeline for the plant’s official return to the grid has not yet been released, pending those regulatory approvals.
