Dallas Convention Center Redesign Project

The fate of 3.5bn+ Dallas convention center redesign project is to be decided on this week in a tense voting decision. The project’s redesign has intensified debates among city council members as it faces costly delays. The redesign is under consideration because current plans would cut off access to the Jefferson Viaduct. Conversely, this would affect drivers coming from Oak Cliff hence the need for reconsideration.

City Manager Kimberly Tolbert is urging the council to vote against the redesign. She announced earlier last week that changing course would delay the project into 2030. Moreover, it would create significant economic impacts. “Since we closed the center in 2025, we’ve lost 3,000 associated jobs from not having a fully functioning,” said Craig Davis, Visit Dallas CEO.

A redesign is also expected to cost nearly $600 million. Davis said the city stands to lose $1.5 million each month in anticipated hotel tax revenue during the closure, which was already expected to last through 2029. The Valley Ranch convention center is another project advancing that is expected to boost the local economy and event opportunties in East Montgomery, Texas. The project is currently on track for a late 2026 opening.

Outlook on the Dallas Convention Center Redesign Project

The Dallas Convention Center redesign project is expected to be clear as voting from council members is set for Wednesday. However, Davis is noting that the decision should not be taken lightly because of the current impact it is having. Davis said the city stands to lose $1.5 million each month in anticipated hotel tax revenue during the closure, which was already expected to last through 2029.

The prior 2025 redesign plan lowered the building’s height to cut costs by $500 million. However, now the new problem that emerged which was the blocking of the Jefferson Viaduct from crossing into downtown has to be addressed. Major demolition of the old facility is well underway. However, portions of the center are being kept operational to accommodate scheduled events and the 2026 FIFA World Cup International Broadcast Center. Current outlook notes that many future events planned for the convention center will have to be pushed well into 2031.
