Masterton to Carterton project continues to shape transport infrastructure in New Zealand as authorities build on the completed highway upgrade with a broader program of State Highway 2 improvements across the Wairarapa.
Although the project’s major construction phase has concluded, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has moved into the next stage of preserving the corridor through targeted pavement renewals, maintenance works and resilience upgrades, ensuring the investment continues to deliver safer and more reliable journeys for road users.
The project upgraded an 8.8km section of SH2 between Masterton and Carterton by introducing three roundabouts, flexible median barriers, roadside safety barriers, wider shoulders and safer intersections.
These improvements have significantly reduced the risk of head-on collisions while improving traffic flow along one of the Wairarapa’s busiest transport routes.
SH2 investment builds on the Masterton to Carterton project
In 2026, the focus has shifted from constructing new infrastructure to protecting the long-term performance of the completed corridor.
NZTA is carrying out scheduled maintenance closures between Masterton and Carterton to undertake pavement repairs, resurfacing and other essential highway works that extend the life of the road and minimize future disruptions.
The maintenance program forms part of a wider investment strategy across the Wairarapa highway network.
Recent reconstruction projects and resurfacing works around Masterton, Carterton and Greytown have strengthened key sections of SH2, improving ride quality while enhancing resilience against heavy traffic and changing weather conditions.
These works complement the completed Masterton to Carterton project rather than replacing it. Together, they create a safer and more durable transport corridor that supports commuters, freight operators, emergency services and regional businesses.
Masterton to Carterton project remains central to regional connectivity
The completed highway upgrade continues to play a strategic role in New Zealand’s Road to Zero program by improving safety along a corridor that previously experienced a high number of serious crashes.
