The $20bn Intel Ohio One Chip Plant in Licking County, New Albany recently achieved a massive architectural milestone. In particular, the construction team completed the installation of the first of the very large number of structural trusses in the New Albany campus. The two massive wall-like structures represent the next vertical construction stage, which is now connected by this complicated structure of huge steel beams.
The installation constituted “a very big leap forward” for the ambitious megaproject, said Naga Chandrasekaran, executive vice president of Intel Foundry. Financial challenges had been a major concern for the development but with the current boom in AI, the demands for high-end Semiconductors have been completely turned upside down. Finally, this major structural step is an affirmation of Intel’s long-term dedication to making Central Ohio a high-tech manufacturing home.
Another major industrial project making headway is the Hyundai steel mill plant that is advancing construction as it aims to provide 1,000+ jobs to local residents. HPLS is currently hiring for over 40 positions in engineering, logistics, and supply chain, which will be the first to be filled. This is the start of an extensive program of recruitment, though.
Navigating Delays and Federal Supply Chain Waivers
Implementing a semiconductor campus of this size comes with a number of logistical and supply chain challenges. Intel had hoped to finish the two plants much sooner, but recently updated its schedule, stating the two plants will be fully operational by 2032. Moreover, Intel won a key one-year exemption from new measures restricting foreign-made robotics last week from the federal government.
This particular waiver enables the company to continue using a special technology that is offered overseas that is not offered in the U.S. As such, this government ruling will avoid significant disruption and will help Intel keep up its complicated manufacturing and construction program.
Future Production on Intel Ohio One Chip Plant in New Albany
The $20B Intel Ohio One facility has an impact that is hard to overestimate. These fabs, once in operation, will manufacture some of the world’s most advanced semiconductors ever. At present, Intel says it has orders for more of these chips than it can supply in the world, making the absolute requirement of the Ohio campus apparent.
Lindsay Johnson, director of construction at Intel Ohio One, was exultant about the recent progress with the structure. Looking ahead, industry analysts will be keenly watching Intel’s third quarter financial results for more clarity on the company’s fiscal turnaround. The project is overall to take America back to being the undisputed leader in the making of semiconductors at home.
