South Korean shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai has signed an agreement with US engineering and construction firm Kiewit Corporation to build a new advanced shipyard in the United States. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 while operations are targeted for 2029. Additionally, the new shipyard is expected to create approximately 3,000 domestic jobs and strengthen the country’s shipbuilding capacity.
The New Hyundai-Kiewit Shipyard: Project Overview
The project will be developed through a joint venture named HD Kiewit Shipbuilding. It will combine HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding technology and operational experience with Kiewit’s expertise in large-scale construction, engineering and industrial fabrication.
Unlike projects that involve acquiring and modernizing existing shipyards, HD Kiewit JV will establish a new facility on an existing industrial site connected to the US Gulf Coast. The precise site, investment value and planned production capacity have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Commercial Shipbuilding and Military Support Vessel Programs
The new Hyundai-Kiewit shipyard in the US is intended to support both commercial shipbuilding and military support vessel programs. The JV will also explore manufacturing ship blocks and modules for supply to other American shipyard. This will potentially expand domestic production capacity beyond the new facility itself.
The partners have also indicated that future cooperation could extend to port infrastructure development.
Advanced Shipbuilding Technology to be Introduced
HD Hyundai also plans to apply its Future of Shipyard concept to the new facility. The concept uses digital and automated manufacturing technologies designed to improve production efficiency, quality control and workplace safety.
The planned technologies include digital twins, automated production systems and robotic welding. A digital twin can provide a virtual representation of physical equipment or production processes. This allows operators to monitor performance, test operational scenarios and identify potential problems before they affect manufacturing. Robotic welding and automated production systems can also improve repeatability and reduce reliance on labor-intensive manual processes.
The integration of these technologies is also expected to help address some of the workforce productivity challenges facing US shipbuilding. However, the companies have not yet disclosed detailed engineering designs or the facility’s production throughput. Construction cost or the precise schedule for installing and commissioning individual systems have also not yet been disclosed.
Hyundai-Kiewit Shipyard Project in the US Expected to Create 3,000 Jobs
Once fully operational, the new HD Hyundai-Kiewit shipyard is expected to employ approximately 3,000 people in the US.
The workforce is likely to require a mix of shipbuilding, fabrication and engineering skills. Maintenance, logistics and production management capabilities are also likely considerations.
HD Hyundai has also indicated that workforce training and development will form part of its efforts to establish a sustainable local shipbuilding operation. Building domestic skills will be important to the project’s long-term performance. This is especially important as advanced shipyard equipment and digital manufacturing systems require specialized technical expertise. The companies also intend to strengthen the US-based supply chain supporting shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing.
Furthermore, the economic impact could extend beyond direct employment at the facility. Depending on the final project scope and procurement strategy, the development could generate opportunities for local steel suppliers. These will include industrial equipment manufacturers, welding contractors, engineering firms, transport operators and other maritime service providers.
US Shipbuilding Revival Drives Investment
The new shipyard comes as Washington seeks to rebuild American shipbuilding capacity and strengthen the country’s maritime industrial base. This is evidenced by billion-dollar investments across the county, including the Hanwha Philly Shipyard expansion project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
South Korea has also pledged $150 billion toward US shipbuilding initiatives as part of a broader $350 billion investment commitment associated with the two countries’ trade agreement. The shipbuilding allocation is also intended to support industrial cooperation and expand manufacturing capabilities in the United States.
HD Hyundai and Kiewit Offshore Services Partnership
The partnership also builds on an earlier agreement signed in July 2026. Under the agreement, HD Hyundai and Kiewit Offshore Services agreed to pursue US shipbuilding opportunities. This was also inclusive of the production of ship blocks and modules. The latest agreement serves to advance that cooperation toward establishing a dedicated shipbuilding operation.

South Korea’s HD Hyundai Expands Presence in the US Market
For HD Hyundai, the project provides a route to expand its presence in the American market. The South Korean conglomerate will be combining its shipbuilding expertise with a US-based construction and fabrication partner. For Kiewit, the venture creates an opportunity to apply its industrial construction and marine fabrication capabilities to a new shipbuilding facility.
Nevertheless, the project’s delivery will depend on factors including final site development and permitting. Infrastructure requirements, workforce recruitment, equipment installation and the establishment of supply chains also factor in. Further details on the construction budget, financing, vessel production targets and the initial construction contract remain to be disclosed.
