The proposed Latrobe Magnesium US plant carries an estimated capital cost of $1.1 billion to $1.5 billion. Sydney-based Latrobe Magnesium unveiled the project on Tuesday to tap into the North American market. The company is therefore readying itself for its biggest delivery ever outside Australia. The plant would be the first commercial scale magnesium production plant in North America.
The project is targeted directly at the US defence industry, which is experiencing a shortage of the light metal. In particular, magnesium is employed in the manufacture of aircraft and military equipment, where strength and lightness are paramount. Global supply is dominated by China, leaving American manufacturers exposed to disruption. A home-grown plant would provide a safe alternative source for US defense contractors.
Another manufacturing project that is making headway is the Hyundai steel manufacturing facility in Louisiana. The LPA has scheduled a public hearing to outline plans for issuing the bonds. The bonds would be sold by the entity behind the mill, Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana Steel. But those who oppose the steel mill have been asking state financing officials to suspend the bond issue.
Latrobe Magnesium US Plant Designed for Doubling of Capacity
The Latrobe Magnesium US plant will be designed from the start to be a 50,000 ton per year facility. The design, however, can be expanded to 100,000 tons per year as demand increases. First production is targeted for 2030. So the company has about four years to find a site, permits and financing before construction is complete. The announcement did not name a location for the plant. The company has not yet explained how the $1.1 billion to $1.5 billion budget will be paid. Those details will influence the construction schedule. Latrobe is also progressing its magnesium project in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley in Australia.
Project Aligns With US Critical Minerals Push
Washington has been trying to strengthen its domestic supply chains for critical minerals. In addition, magnesium is on the U.S. list of materials considered essential to national security. A commercial scale plant in the USA would fill a void that is currently being met by imports. Finally, financing and site selection in the next few years will determine delivery by 2030.
