The causeway bridge replacement project at Wallops Island is a planned infrastructure development by NASA to replace an existing bridge. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 14, 2025, marking the start of construction for the new structure.
The replacement bridge is expected to be completed in early 2028 and is designed with increased load capacity to accommodate transportation requirements associated with the facility. The event was attended by representatives from state and federal offices, along with officials from NASA, including personnel from the Wallops Flight Facility and the Goddard Space Flight Center.
The new bridge is a collaborative effort of the Federal Highway Administration and NASA. The design-build contract will be carried out by Kokosing Construction Company.
The Wallops Island causeway bridge is the sole automotive connection between NASA’s mainland operations and its island-based launch range and operations. Built more than six decades ago, the bridge has suffered from ongoing weather-related degradation and several repairs. In 2023, NASA received $103 million in federal funding to entirely replace the aging structure and ensure safe access to Wallops Island for decades to come.

U.S.-based Parsons has announced that it has been selected to lead the design of the $409 million Roosevelt Bridge replacement project. Its aim is to replace the existing bridge that was originally built in 1945. The state’s department of transport selected the Zachry Construction/Traylor Brothers Construction Joint Venture to deliver the new two‑mile‑long structure. Parsons joins the significant project as its lead designer.
