A contract has been awarded for the design of the offshore substations and foundations for the wind turbines and the substations at SSE Renewables’ 4.1 GW Berwick Bank offshore wind farm. The contract has been given to Kent, a provider of engineering and design services.

According to the agreement, Kent will finish two multidisciplinary concept ideas for the offshore substation platforms. Additionally, it wil be offering designs for choices for both larger and smaller platforms. Each will be having the same overall capacity. Moreover, twhe business will offer the whole range of services needed to fulfill the concept designs.

These services include project and engineering management as well as technical delivery for disciplines. These are such as high-voltage electrical system design, safety, and various facilities disciplines. As part of the Berwick Bank project, Kent has also been asked to develop concept drawings for the substructure. The drawings will include foundation and substructure plans for wind turbines and offshore substations.

The concept drawings, will enable supply chain engagement and further project development. Furthermore, it will take into account alternatives for piling and suction caisson foundations as well as options for transportation and installation of the jacket substructures.

Berwick Bank offshore wind farm project in a nutshell

The 4.1 GW offshore wind farm is 40 kilometers off the east coast of Scotland in the outer Firth of Forth. The project could provide enough green electricity to power more than five million homes.

SSE Renewables submitted a request for an electricity generation license to the UK Gas and Electricity Markets Authority at the start of July. The 2.3 GW Berwick Bank and the 1.85 GW Marr Bank offshore wind farms were the original two projects. They both made up the ten-year-old Berwick Bank project.

SSE Renewables announced in September 2021 that it has consolidated the two offshore wind developments into a single project, the Berwick Bank Wind Farm. Since then, SSE Renewables has twice altered the project’s overall area. This is once last year and once early this year. All those were in preparation for later in 2022 when it will apply to Scottish Ministers for planning consent.
