Plans are underway for a Netflix production facility on a former Fort Monmouth military base in New Jersey. In order to build the facility, Netflix will pay $55 million for a 292-acre site at the army base. Governor Phil Murphy welcomed the development, which he said would eventually create housing, hotel, and film production businesses in the area.

However, the development plans for the Netflix production facility still need to undergo several approvals from local and state officials. The developer is also expecting approval to come soon from the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority. If all goes as planned, the project will create one of the most extensive fully integrated production facilities in the world. This facility will be a very close second to Netflix’s biggest U.S. production hub in Albuquerque, totaling 300 acres.

Development plans for the Netflix production facility

Construction on the Netflix production facility will be done in two phases. The initial phase will involve building 12 sound stages ranging from 15,000 to 40,000 square feet. Additionally, a new studio, back lots, and production support facility will also be available. County and state authorities will carry out some three to six months of due diligence before site work on the studio commences. After completing phase I, Netflix will later build office spaces, a services building, and other related studio spaces. The entire project will cost more than $900 million and it will be completed over the course of several years.

The video streaming company, Netflix, said the former Fort Monmouth base was an ideal site for its Netflix production facility. Especially since the property is the right size and it’s a location filled with top-notch crews and talent. The company also said it had good filming experiences on several shows in New Jersey, including Army of the Dead. Moreover, the location is in close proximity to major metropolitan areas as well as beaches, farmland, and scenic backdrops.

Ted Sarandos, a Co-CEO at Netflix, mentioned that the Netflix production facility could help boost the local and state economy. According to Sarandos, a Netflix studio in the state will create thousands of new jobs and billions in economic output. Netflix expects the project to create about 3,500 jobs during peak construction. Afterward, the developer anticipates between 1,400 and 2,200 new jobs to be created when the facility is fully operational.
