The National Assembly Joint Committees on aviation have been assured of the completion of the N92 billion Abuja airport’s second runway, before the exit of the current regime.
The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, provided the assurance. During a recent oversight visit to the airport by the joint committees of the Senate and House of Representatives headed by Senator Abiodun Olujimi and Hon. Nnolim Nnaji.
According to Sirika, who showed members of the committees from the two chambers of the National Assembly around the ongoing projects at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), the contractor for the second runway, had been fully mobilized.

Furthermore, given the airport’s strategic importance, both chairmen emphasized that the construction of its second runway was long overdue. Nnaji, who demanded the contractor’s assurance that the project would be finished on time, noted that Abuja, as the nominal capital of Nigeria and home to a burgeoning economy, could no longer manage with just one airport runway.
The project manager, Yantao, stressed that with proper funding, CCECC would deliver the Abuja airport’s second runway in six months. In addition, Senate Olujimi took advantage of the opportunity to assure the minister. That the committees will try to put the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) back on the federal budget. Due to the agency’s crucial contribution to the safety of air navigation.
Earlier in his remarks, Senator Sirika commended the Senate and House of Representatives Aviation Committees. For their ongoing assistance to the aviation industry.
Before returning to the National Assembly, the parliamentarians also visited the airport’s cargo terminal. As well as the multi-story parking garage, both of which were nearing completion.

It is the main airport serving the Nigerian capital city and was named after Nigeria’s first President, Nnamdi Azikiwe. The airport is approximately 20km west of Abuja and has an international and a domestic terminal that shares its single runway.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has its head office on the airport grounds. The Abuja non-directional beacon (Ident: AG) is 3.1 km off the threshold of Runway 22. The Abuja VOR-DME (Ident: ABC) is 2.4 km off the same runway.
The airport was built in 2000 and opened in 2002.
Renovation and upgrade project development
In November 2006 the Abuja Gateway Consortium signed a US $101.1m contract for the management of the airport over the next 25 years. The contract included the construction of an airport hotel, private car parks, shopping malls, and a bonded warehouse, totaling US $50m during its first five years, and additionally an upfront payment of US $10m.
According to the business plan, total investments would have amounted to US $371m during the period of the contract. However, then-President Yar’Adua revoked the contract in April 2008.
However, plans were invited for the construction of a second runway. The contract was awarded to Julius Berger Construction Company for US $423M but was revoked due to the high cost.

Nigeria’s Abuja airport terminal expansion to be completed in 2014
The ongoing Abuja Airport terminal expansion project in Nigeria is expected to be completed in December 2014 when it will also be opened for operation.
This was revealed by the Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala during an inspection. He was accompanied by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Gu Xiaojie, from the Chinese construction firm (CCECC) which is currently executing the Abuja Airport terminal expansion project and has taken it to 30% completion.
On the same note, the ongoing US$849m Federal Capital Transport Authority (FCTA) light rail project is also expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2015.
The Federal Government has embarked on improving most of the nation’s airport terminals across the country through various remodeling and expansion works in view of bringing them to international standards.
In a statement, Dr. Okonjo Iweala said: “We took a loan of US$500m from the Exim Bank of China representing the Chinese government in order to construct Modern Terminals in this country, this is something we need and we have four outstanding terminals of Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt in mind, the expansion works are ongoing.”
She further explained that the government is similarly constructing the Enugu and Bayelsa terminals from the government’s internal funding. According to the Executive Secretary, Transportation Secretariat of the FCTA Jonathan Iyoke, the Abuja Airport terminal expansion scheme, when completed, will connect the city center to the satellite towns in the country.

Nigeria to prioritize construction of a second runway at Abuja airport
A senior Special Assistant to the President on Aviation, Cpt. Shehu Iyal has said that the Nigerian president has issued a directive to relevant ministries to prioritize the construction of a second runway at Abuja airport. This was during a news conference held early this week.
The planned second runway on the Abuja airport is expected to increase safety, security, and efficiency at the airport, amidst increased interest of international airlines to fly to and from Nigeria as indicated on the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria.
Shehu Iyal has said that construction of the new runway is to start “soon” after the directive to have it revisited and placed on the national priority list.
Iyal has also said that the airline sector has recorded a boost following the government’s plan to waive customs duties on airplanes and spare parts for operators. The boost has also contributed to the country’s efforts to restructure the sector. The restructured airports include the Bauchi, Dutse, Akwa Ibom, and Asaba. Already there is firefighting equipment installed in various airports in the country.
He also said that the construction of agro and cargo terminals had reached an advanced stage. Earlier on, the Abuja airport expansion was planned to be completed before end of this year, but this might delay.

Senate halts construction of the second runway at an airport in Nigeria
The construction of a second runway at an airport in Nigeria has suffered a major blow after the country’s senate termed the project expensive.
The construction of the runaway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Nigeria’s capital Abuja was set to cost US$320m.
Although it acknowledged the urgent need for a second runway at the airport, the senate lamented the amount needed for the project construction as too high.
The Senate urged the Federal Government to ensure that due process is followed in the design, award, and procurement of the contract and that the cost is reduced considerably.
The Senate argues that the cost of constructing the runway far exceeded the cost of constructing some airports in Nigeria.
For instance, says the Senate, terminal 5 in Heathrow Airport with four lanes of a 4km runway, cost less than N25 billion.
The Nigerian Senate, therefore, wonders why the proposed construction of a mere runway at Abuja Airport would cost US$320m.
This is not the first time that the construction of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Nigeria is facing obstacles. President Goodluck Jonathan had opposed the project due to its high cost and Senators are now urging President Muhammad Buhari to similarly reject it.
“The second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Nigeria is necessary but we cannot aimlessly spend such a huge amount of money on this project,” said Senators.

Construction work at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Nigeria to resume in 2016
Construction work at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Nigeria is expected to resume in 2016. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Senate Adhoc committee on Aviation Chairman has announced.
The second runway of the airport will be on the budget list for 2016, as part of the recommended projects by Senate Kwankwaso. Besides being on the budget list, the project is also expected to be completed as scheduled with no further delays.
According to the Committee Chairman, a further recommendation will be made concerning the airport project particularly the maintenance of the second runway and the construction equipment to be used. Regarding the maintenance, it will be conducted on both minor and major ones.
The Senate committee has seen the need to intervene in the project situation and make remarkable amendments in favor of the aviation industry.
The planning of the airport has been developed in phases without serious interruptions to operations. Currently, phase 1 and the presidential wing of the airport have been developed while construction work on phase 2 is ongoing.
Phase 1 is made up of the cargo terminal, which is the moment being used as the domestic terminal, the control tower, air traffic control, and the runway. The presidential wing comprises the Presidential Hanger, guest chalet, and the Presidential Lounge fully developed and a taxiway linking the runway.
Phase II of the airport currently under construction and almost complete will comprise the first module of the international terminal building, protocol lounge, access roads, fire station, the linking of the international and presidential wings with water lines from water scheme services, and a parallel taxiway.

Major international airport in Nigeria to undergo runway repairs
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has revealed plans to shut down a major international airport in Nigeria for runway repairs. The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Nigeria is said to have a dilapidated infrastructure. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will oversee the shutdown activity, as well as the repair, works.
Hadi Sirika, the Minister of State, for Aviation revealed the shutting down plans during a meeting with the industry stakeholders in Abuja. The minister pointed out that, the dilapidated infrastructure could compromise the safety of the passengers.
The airport experienced the same situation about a year and a half ago for the same reasons for repairing the runway. The runway situation has raised the need for a second runway to be constructed, as when one runway goes bad, there will be no need to shut down the whole airport as the second runway will take over and handle activities as usual.

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport runway to be rehabilitated
The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport runway in Abuja Nigeria will get a new face after the Federal Government announced that it was releasing funds for its renovation.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) agreed that the project is expected to kick off any time now and they will give adequate notice to all parties involved.
The Minister of State, Aviation, and Capt. Hadi Sirika is said to have set up a meeting to ensure that the project’s regulations are met before it is launched.
“Government is making an urgent effort to start the rehabilitation of the runway at the Abuja airport and the government has provided funds for the work, which could start anytime from now.
“The committee is expected to schedule the maintenance dates, which are expected to run from days to weeks.
The minister also added that they have not so far identified the team that will carry out the project though he added that they will choose one from a very competitive tendering process.
“Among some of the things we are considering is whether the runway will be closed all the daylong or for some few hours as the construction goes on” he added
According to the source, Sirika had designated Kaduna airport as an alternative to Abuja so that flights would be diverted to Kaduna while work is ongoing at the nation’s second busiest airport.
Once the project is complete it’s expected to improve on the transport system of the country above all increase the number of airlines that will be landing at the airport.
This is among the many transport projects that have been launched by the Federal government of Nigeria as they look forward to ensuring that they streamline the transport industry.

Upgrading of Abuja Airport Runway in Nigeria starts
The long-awaited upgrading of top Nigeria’s Abuja Airport Runway has kicked off and is expected to end on time. According to the main contractor carrying the project, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc Yesterday marked the official date for the kick-off of the project after the airport officially closed down for a number of days to allow the project to run swiftly.
The contractor added that the Abuja runway repairs will affect the traveling for the Airport and passengers will be forced to use Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The markings will also tell flyers that the runway is not available even for an emergency landing.
According to the reports given by the contractor, they have all it takes to ensure that no more delays are expected and they will ensure that they closely monitor the progress of the project until it ends.
The government had initially promised to ensure that the project gets completed on time so that normal operations can kick off at the Airport. The International Terminal Manager, Mrs. Hajara Musa, confirmed that the contractor had commenced work on the runway.
“I can confirm that Julius Berger Plc is on the ground carrying out the rehabilitation as you can see their equipment already working,” she said. She added that the management will be on the toes of the contractor so that the project can be completed on time. “We are sure some of the business will stand still within the Airport but due to the expansion that is for goodwill” she added
Johnson Erijo of the Delta State of Assembly said “The arrangement, for now, is perfect though I don’t know what it will become later what I’m experiencing of the operation now is seamless and working fine.”
Nigerian Minister to resign if the deadline to reopen Abuja Airport is missed
Nigeria’s Aviation minister Senator Hadi Sirika has vowed to resign if the rehabilitation of Abuja Airport fails to be completed on time. According to the minister, he will keep the project manager carrying out the project on task to ensure that the current deadline is met.
He added that he will be of no value if the federal government fails to meet the six-weeks deadline for the rehabilitation of the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The minister made this known during a meeting with Aviation Round Table (ART) in Lagos where he assured them that the project is on track.
Sirika said the level of work done in the first three weeks since the runway was closed on March 8, 2017, had shown that the work would be completed on the given date (April 19, 2017). He explained that so far so good the project is ongoing well and they will ensure that the airport starts its operation on the date set by the government in agreement with the contractor.
He explained that the Kaduna airport was chosen as an alternative to Abuja airport because the other airports around Abuja, including the airports in Minna, Jos, and Makurdi do not provide adequate security and safety measures but it was Kaduna airport that has dual carriageway to Abuja, which road could easily be rehabilitated within the period the airport in Abuja would be closed.
He also noted that while the Minna airport is closer to Abuja, the road is a single lane, filled with potholes and along undulating topography and hills, adding that it is insecure and unsafe compared to Kaduna. Besides, he said while there was an immediate plan to rehabilitate the Kaduna-Abuja road, there was no plan to rebuild the Minna-Abuja road.
He added that the government has lost a good income in the few days that the project has been ongoing and they will ensure that ends.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja runway has been reopened and received two aircraft on the same day. The airport had been undergoing expansion work. The federal government of Nigeria confirmed the reports and said that normal business activities commenced at the Abuja airport after six weeks of rehabilitation.
The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, and Ethiopian Airlines landed at the newly reconstructed runway. Sirika who landed first on the runway from Kaduna Airport on an aircraft appealed to Nigerians not to celebrate the reopening of the airport runway because the April 19 deadline was just a target that the aviation ministry set for itself and met.
The runway has been completed and it is in perfect shape, the final exercises including the friction test were carried out this morning and it was concluded that it meets the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

Opening of the new Abuja Airport terminal in Nigeria to be delayed
The opening of the New Abuja Airport Terminal in Nigeria is likely to be delayed despite the tremendous work already done at the new terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
While inspecting the facility, the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika said one of the causes of the delay is a foundational issue that had altered the master plan of the airport.
According to him, the planning of the project did not envisage that the building will lead to additional work, power, and water supply. He said that it was also discovered that the building will block both the control and fire towers which would require relocation, so additional work is required to link it with the existing terminal as well as expand the apron to accommodate bigger airplanes.

“The contractor has told us some of the challenges he has been facing regarding some of the components of work and some additional work required for this project to be put into use. Unfortunately, some of these components are complex which would delay this job and some of them are from the foundation like that of the sewer and water.
There is also the problem of the control tower blocking the access into the terminal apron and also the inadequate nature of the apron itself,” said Sirika.

Abuja Airport’s new Terminal to begin operation this October
The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed the new terminal at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja is will commence operation in October this year.
According to Saleh Dunoma, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the terminal will be put to use in order to decongest the old terminal, which is now overstretched as a result of the increase in passenger traffic.
Dunoma, further added that by the end of August, work will be concluded at the new terminal and it will also be opened for service. The major work to be done will be to connect the new terminal to the old one in order to have seamless passenger movement, adding that even though, the new terminal was designated for travelers on international destinations.
“We are pressing the contractor to finish everything in August so that by October we can start operation in the building. So, we are working together – both the contractor, FAAN, and all those involved in the project, to ensure that we meet our target,” said Dunoma.
He said the structures, which inhibited the use of the new terminal like the fire service building located very close to the facility, and the control tower, which is blocked by the terminal would be removed in the second phase of the work. The terminal can also be put into use while plans are made to remove the structures.

Power supply
In order to have uninterrupted power and water supply to the new facility, the FAAN managing director said the minister of the federal capital territory had directed that the airport should be connected to the central electricity and water system, adding that the government had already approved funds for independent power supply.
“We have started the process of connecting the power system. The Minister of Federal Capital Territory had instructed that the airport should be connected to the city’s mains electric system and power systems. Also, the government has approved money for the supply of independent power supply for the entire airport. So, when these are completed by October the terminal will become functional. That is when we shall start using the terminal,” said Dunoma.
He explained that out of the five new terminals being built at the airports in Kano, Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, and Port Harcourt, the Abuja airport will kick off first, followed by that of Port Harcourt, which is at the same level of completion with the Abuja facility.
“Abuja and Port Harcourt will start first. Their completion is at the same level but there is so much traffic in Abuja. It will ease traffic if we start in Abuja first. So our intention is to start in Abuja. Port Harcourt is gradually coming up,” he said.
The Abuja new terminal is one of the four airport facilities being built by the Chinese with US $500m loan secured by the federal government, which paid US $100m counterpart fund for the projects.

New Airport Terminal launched in Nigeria
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has commissioned a new terminal at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, which has the capacity to process 15 million passengers every year and covers a space of approximately 56,000 square meters.
According to the President, the new terminal shows the Federal Government’s commitment to developing Nigeria into a regional air transportation hub and assuming its leadership in the aviation sub-sector. “The new terminal is the first to be connected to the rail transport system in the country and the region at large, providing the users with choice in the mode of transport to and from the city center,” he added.
Facilities at the terminal
The terminal also has 72 check-in counters, five baggage collection carousels, and 28 immigration desks at arrival, and 16 at departure. Other facilities include eight security screening points, eight-passenger boarding bridges, a walkway to link the FCT metro rail, and an additional apron for remote parking of aircraft, among others, that were designed and laid out in accordance with modern requirements for airport operations.
The president further urged government officials in charge of the gateways to sustain the momentum and ensure travelers in and out of the country have the best experience possible as a necessary complement to the ultra-modern terminal.
The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Managing Director, Mr. Saleh Dunoma, also commented that the new terminal would be used for international flights, while the old one would be used for domestic flights.

The airport currently has one runway which is 3,609m long and has an asphalt surface. Sirika noted that the second runway became very necessary, following the fact that the Airport was becoming very busy. “Operators would be on the ground 20 to 30 minutes waiting to take off or even to land, which is so expensive and very inefficient,” he added.
The project will be among the many transport projects that have been launched by the Federal government of Nigeria as they look forward to ensuring that they streamline the transport industry. The new runway will replace the existing 27-year-old runway at the airport.
When completed, the project is expected to improve the air transport system in the country by increasing the number of airlines that will be landing at the airport. Construction of the runway will help in making the airport a hub for Western Africa.
