The Riyadh driverless monorail project has reached a major construction milestone within the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD). Hassan Allam Construction Saudi installed a steel guideway beam across Al Thumama Road in July 2026. The installation advances the elevated transit system toward completion and eventual passenger operations. It also confirms that construction has progressed beyond the design and pre-construction stage reported previously.
The monorail will provide an internal transport connection across KAFD in Riyadh. It will also integrate with the existing Riyadh Metro network and support movement between key district destinations.
The project’s current value has not been officially disclosed by KAFD. However, industry reports have estimated the contract at approximately SAR1.2 billion, equivalent to about $320 million.
Riyadh driverless monorail project moves into structural construction
The latest milestone centers on the installation of a steel guideway beam over Al Thumama Road. Hassan Allam Construction Saudi completed the operation with Hassan Allam Steel handling structural steel works.
The crossing represents an important step because the monorail will operate on an elevated circular guideway. Therefore, guideway installation remains central to advancing the civil works.
The project will extend approximately 3.6 kilometers through KAFD. Six elevated stations will serve offices, retail destinations, leisure facilities and other major locations.
Additionally, six driverless trains will operate on the circular route. Each train will support automated operations without requiring conventional onboard drivers.
The system will use a fully automated operating model. SYSTRA has provided technical and supervision services covering both systems and civil engineering.
Furthermore, Egis secured the site supervision consultant role for the reactivated transit project. Its appointment strengthened construction oversight as the project moved toward physical delivery.
The Riyadh driverless monorail project is advancing alongside other major rail investments across the Saudi capital. In the latest development, RCRC awarded the contract for the Riyadh Expo Metro Station, which will serve the Expo 2030 Riyadh site on Line 4. The station will strengthen connectivity between the Expo development and Riyadh’s wider automated metro network.
KAFD monorail project strengthens Riyadh urban connectivity
The Riyadh driverless monorail project forms part of KAFD’s broader strategy for integrated urban mobility. The district covers approximately 1.6 million square meters and contains 95 buildings.
KAFD plans the monorail around its 10-Minute City concept. This approach aims to place workplaces, retail, leisure and other destinations within convenient walking distances.
The monorail will complement the district’s extensive pedestrian infrastructure. KAFD already uses elevated, climate-controlled skywalks to connect buildings across the development.
Moreover, the monorail will connect with the KAFD Metro Station. That station forms part of Riyadh Metro and supports connections across the city.
Riyadh Metro began operations in December 2024 and now provides a 176-kilometre driverless network. The system comprises six lines serving approximately 85 stations.
The KAFD monorail will therefore add another automated transport layer to Riyadh’s growing mobility network. It will focus primarily on short-distance movement within the financial district.
The system will carry up to 3,500 passengers per hour during peak periods. This capacity will support workers, residents and visitors moving around the district.

The project is expected to reach testing and commissioning during 2027. Earlier project reporting indicated that testing would begin before full commissioning during that year.
However, the July 2026 construction milestone provides a more current indication of progress. The installation of the guideway beam demonstrates that major structural works are underway.
The project also reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader push toward automated and lower-emission urban transport. KAFD intends to reduce dependence on private vehicles through integrated mobility options.
