Sydney Metro City Project Enters Operational Phase as Southwest Extension Advances

Home » Transport » Sydney Metro City Project Enters Operational Phase as Southwest Extension Advances

Sydney Metro City project has transitioned from construction into operational service following its 2024 opening, while the broader City & Southwest program continues advancing toward full completion in 2026. The underground metro section, running from Chatswood through Sydney’s CBD to Sydenham, now forms a critical part of Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure network, with ongoing works focused on extending services to Bankstown and completing system integration.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Metro City project remains a central component of Sydney’s wider metro expansion strategy, complementing newer developments such as the Sydney Metro West line, which is progressing toward a 2032 completion target with tunneling largely complete and station construction accelerating.

Sydney Metro City project current status and system integration

The Sydney Metro City project opened to passengers in August 2024 after final safety approvals, marking a major milestone in Sydney’s rail modernization program. The 16km section includes six new underground stations and a new harbor rail crossing, significantly increasing capacity across the metropolitan rail network.

However, the project remains incomplete as the Southwest extension from Sydenham to Bankstown continues under conversion to metro standards. Construction and system upgrades across this section are progressing, with full operations expected in the second half of 2026. Additionally, testing and commissioning activities are ongoing to ensure integration between the existing metro network and the upgraded corridor. Therefore, the project is currently in a hybrid phase, combining operational service in the city section with active construction and testing in the southwest corridor.

Sydney Metro City project construction scope and delivery progress

The Sydney Metro City project forms part of a broader 30km City & Southwest program, originally launched to extend metro services across Sydney’s core and southern suburbs. The project required complex tunneling beneath Sydney Harbor and dense urban areas, representing one of the most challenging rail construction efforts in Australia.

Moreover, the Southwest conversion involves upgrading existing heavy rail infrastructure into a fully automated metro system with platform screen doors and modern signaling. Consequently, construction teams are completing station upgrades, track works, and system installations across multiple sites simultaneously. Although the city section is operational, final delivery depends on completing the Bankstown line conversion and system-wide integration.

The Sydney Metro City project has shifted from construction into operational delivery; however, final completion depends on the successful rollout of the Southwest extension and full network integration by 2026. Meanwhile, Australia’s wider rail expansion agenda continues to face scrutiny, particularly in relation to the Sydney-Newcastle High Speed Rail project, a $90 billion proposal that highlights the engineering and financial challenges shaping the country’s transition toward faster intercity rail systems.

Sydney Metro project

Opening date

The new metro line in sydney from chattswood to sydenham with additional underground stations are currently under construction with promise of fast reliable and more frequent services come 4 August 2024 subject to regulatory approvals.

Recently, Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) said that Sydney will enter a new phase of transportation with the opening of the Sydney Metro City on August 4, 2024. This initiative seeks to deliver fast, safe and reliable metro services across the city subject to favourable trial running and system performance tests, as well as regulatory requirements.

Project overview

This project comprises six new stations within the CBD of Sydney; Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Central, with the stations still undergoing vigorous testing and touches. This line will achieve historic travel time once implemented where passengers will be able to move from Victoria Cross in North Sydney to Barangaroo in a record three minutes, or from Waterloo to Central in two minutes.

Further, the proposed Sydney Metro West line is well on track, the main tender packages for station construction and infrastructure development are termed. This line will effectively double rail connections between greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD and will also incorporate new stations that include Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays. Some of the shortlisted bidders in these categories include CPB Contractors, Lendlease Construction, and John Holland Pty Ltd.

The project also envisages significant long-term benefits as part of its overall long-term benefits. The Sydney Metro rail system will increase to 113 kilometers and 46 stations by 2030 thus improving the connectivity of Sydney as a city. However, some of them, for example, the Metro West line to Greater Parramatta, are delayed and will be completed no sooner than by 2030. Jo Haylen, the Transport Minister has been insistent that the Sydney Metro is highly transformative, comparing it to the actual construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The future roll out planned for mid 2024 is expected to be a turning point of Sydney’s public transport with new fast, reliable, and frequent services that will revolutionize mobility in the city.
