Tiktok is making plans to construct a $1bn data center campus in Europe as the firm builds its second data campus in Finland. The move comes less than year after the company constructed its first data center in the European nation. Furthermore, it facilitates Tiktok’s movement of data storage for European users to the continent. The announcement comes as Tiktok’s Chinese parent ByteDance in January avoided a U.S. ban over data protection concerns.

Moreover, European nations are ratcheting up pressure on social media companies to protect children from their addictive algorithms. The $1bn investment in data center is for an initial capacity of 50 megawatts.

However, its total potential capacity will be 128 megawatts and will be constructed in Lahti, located in southern Finland. The investment is part of the company’s “12 billion (euro) European data sovereignty initiative delivering industry-leading protections for the data of over 200 million European users,” it said. The project facilitates Europe to be part of the data center construction boom happening around the world.

Finland as a European Hub for AI Development other than Tiktok Data Center Campus

Other than the second Tiktok data center campus in Finland, the nation has become a magnet for data centers. Companies including Microsoft and Google are also interested as they look to curb energy costs and meet climate goals. The country’s cold climate, low-cost and low-carbon electricity makes it suitable for data center developments. Furthermore, it has a stable, business-friendly regulatory environment within the European Union.

Nonetheless, Finnish politicians were alarmed by TikTok’s plan for its first data center in Finland after it was first revealed in April last year. While Finland’s defense ministry had approved the investment in ‌2024, politicians had not been informed. Last year, Finland’s then-minister of economic affairs, Wille Rydman, called for the project to be “reconsidered” due to security concerns and lack of openness around the company’s plans.

Despite this, The mayor in Lahti celebrated the fresh investment decision. “In the context of Lahti, the investment is substantial. We are pleased that a main tenant agreement has been signed and that the project is progressing as planned,” Lahti Mayor Niko Kyynarainen said in a statement.
