The $22bn+ Riyadh metro train project is pushing hard on its massive urban transit network. In particular, French multinational Alstom recently won a very lucrative $515 million contract. This is a significant manufacturing contract that was awarded by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. As a result, Alstom will be providing brand new driverless trains to the busy system. These new vehicles will fit into the current transit system. In addition, the order is designed to make a substantial contribution to the overall daily passenger capacity. In the end, this ambitious expansion is a solution to the fast-growing demand for public transport.
The Riyadh Metro train project is also complimenting the GCC Rail link project. The monumental $15bn GCC Rail Link Project by Saudi Arabia is aggressively advancing despite escalating conflicts across the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is still very much determined to finish this multi-national railway project, which is 2,177 kilometers long. Geopolitical tensions constantly threaten maritime shipping in the Red Sea, but this massive land-based shipping route is very secure. As a result, the developers are speeding up the construction process to make all six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council physically connected.
Outlook on the Riyadh Metro Train Project in Saudi Arabia
The deployment of these extra trains will need to be carefully integrated on three separate routes. In particular, new units will be installed on Line 3 in the Madinah Road corridor. Later, Line 4 to King Khalid International Airport will also be upgraded. Lastly, the Abdulrahman bin Auf Road corridor is completed with Line 6. Furthermore, Alstom will continue to operate all these new trains under the existing operating contract. This approach will provide mechanical continuity between the three separate metro lines. Consequently, commuters in the city will have much faster and frequent commutes.
Building on Past Success and Rising Ridership
This new order is built on Alstom’s successful regional experience. The company has already delivered 116 driverless trains to the network successfully. As a result, local authorities rely on their vast engineering and manufacturing skills completely. The large-scale transit system was opened to the public in late 2024 with a great success. Since then, the metro has transported more than 100 million passengers efficiently. This $515 million investment is therefore just keeping up with the explosive ridership numbers. The city of Riyadh will continue to be a world-class city for automated transport.
