Maydan Mahzam oil field expansion has reached a major construction milestone after QatarEnergy selected contractors for two principal offshore packages. The awards move the redevelopment toward engineering, fabrication, offshore installation and brownfield construction. The project carries an estimated value of more than $4 billion, according to industry reporting.

QatarEnergy selected a consortium of PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) and Singapore-based Seatrium for package one. Meanwhile, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC) secured package two.

PTSC confirmed its selection through a disclosure to the Hanoi Stock Exchange. Its wholly owned subsidiary, PTSC Mechanical & Construction, received QatarEnergy’s letter of award.

The companies will continue negotiations before executing the definitive package-one contract. PTSC expects the agreement to be signed in October 2026.

Maydan Mahzam oil field construction advances offshore facilities

Maydan Mahzam oil field lies approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Qatar’s coastline. It also sits about 28 kilometers southeast of Halul Island.

The field operates in waters approximately 40 meters deep. Qatar discovered the field during the 1960s, and production began in 1965.

QatarEnergy wants the redevelopment to upgrade aging infrastructure. The company also aims to extend the field’s operating life and sustain long-term productivity.

QatarEnergy issued the main engineering, procurement and construction tender in February 2025. The company divided the wider programme into four packages.

Contractors submitted technical bids for the two main packages in September 2025. QatarEnergy later extended commercial-bid deadlines several times.

The bidders ultimately submitted commercial prices by June 21, 2026. The latest awards now establish the contractors for the two principal packages.

Maydan Mahzam oil field package scopes

Package one carries a substantial offshore construction program. PTSC and Seatrium will deliver seven new topsides under the package.

The structures require more than 78,000 metric tones of fabrication. The main process topside alone will weigh approximately 19,400 metric tones.

The remaining topsides will use 10-legged jacket structures. The package also includes modifications to five existing topsides.

Furthermore, contractors will construct four new bridges and support platforms with jackets. The scope also covers brownfield works at Halul Island.

PTSC’s responsibilities include engineering, procurement, construction, transportation and offshore installation. The contractor will also undertake hook-up, commissioning and brownfield modifications.

COOEC’s package two covers engineering, procurement, construction and installation. Its scope includes topsides, umbilicals and cables supporting the offshore expansion.

The development forms part of QatarEnergy’s broader investment in mature offshore oil assets. The company has also advanced redevelopment work at the nearby Bul Hanine field.

In August 2025, QatarEnergy awarded two Bul Hanine EPC packages to COOEC. Doha Petroleum Construction Company received the third package.

The Maydan Mahzam awards therefore strengthen the construction pipeline for Qatar’s mature offshore fields. They also create substantial fabrication and offshore installation requirements for international contractors.

The offshore award also highlights QatarEnergy’s continued investment in major hydrocarbon infrastructure. This approach mirrors developments elsewhere in the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia’s Jafurah programme, where Hyundai Engineering recently completed Phase 1 gas processing construction.
