The Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers have released the first exterior renderings of their new Philadelphia 76ers Flyers arena on the historic Spectrum grounds. As a result, the privately funded facility will create almost $6 billion in economic activity over the next decade. Scheduled to open in 2030, the Philadelphia 76ers Flyers arena will also host Philadelphia’s new WNBA expansion team. In the meantime, the project is the biggest fully privately funded development in the city’s history.

The Philadelphia 76ers Flyers arena will host three professional teams and be a significant economic driver for South Philadelphia. In particular, the site is expected to bring in almost 15,000 jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue. Thus, the School District of Philadelphia and the city will directly benefit from the transformative development. This historic project is a collaboration between Comcast Corporation and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment.

Another major stadium project advancing is the Las Vegas Athletics ballpark which is a planned Major League Baseball stadium under construction on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. The approximately $1.75 billion project is being developed on part of the former Tropicana resort site at the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, with the stadium scheduled to open for the Athletics’ 2028 season.

Philadelphia 76ers Flyers Arena Design Draws Inspiration from Historic Spectrum

Global design firm Populous and nationally recognized architect Moody Nolan were selected to design the Philadelphia 76ers Flyers arena. In particular, the design is inspired by the original Spectrum shape, where both teams played for almost 30 years. In addition, the exterior has a bold, instantly recognizable South Philadelphia landmark profile with stacked, cantilevered bands.

The facility will be one of the most technologically advanced, experience-based arenas in the nation. Also, the design is reflective of Philadelphia’s distinct sports culture, neighborhood character and civic pride. Furthermore, the Philadelphia 76ers Flyers arena links the next destination for city sports to one of its most historic athletic venues.

Fan Plazas and Public Spaces Enhance the Arena Experience

Large fan plazas will continue to provide venue energy outside the Philadelphia 76ers Flyers arena, where active outdoor gathering areas will be provided. In particular, a wide arrival stair mirrors the iconic landmarks of Philadelphia, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. The property has more than 1/2 acre of flexible outdoor space for additional entertainment.

Josh Harris, the Philadelphia 76ers’ Managing Partner, stressed fan-centric development. In addition, food-and-beverage pavilions will expand the restaurant presence across the arena district. The design is still evolving as a result of fan surveys, focus groups and community engagement throughout the approval process.
