Queensland supernode battery project has reached a major construction milestone as its planned battery campus moves beyond 3 GWh of storage capacity. The Brendale development is strengthening Queensland’s electricity network while supporting Australia’s shift toward renewable generation. Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners is developing the project beside the South Pine transmission switchyard. The strategic location gives the battery direct access to Queensland’s high-voltage electricity network.

The first three stages will deliver 780 MW and approximately 3,074 MWh of battery storage. Quinbrook has committed A$1.4 billion to develop these three stages. That investment equals roughly $900 million based on recent exchange rates.

The milestone comes as the project transitions from construction into large-scale commercial operation. Stage 1 started commercial operations in February 2026. Meanwhile, Stage 2 reached commercial operations in July 2026.

Queensland Supernode Battery Project pushes towards 3 GWh

The project combines three large battery stages at the Brendale site. Stage 1 provides 260 MW and 619 MWh of storage capacity. Stage 2 adds another 260 MW and 1,239 MWh, according to the latest project figures.

Together, Stages 1 and 2 provide 520 MW and 1,858 MWh of storage. Origin Energy holds long-term tolling agreements covering both stages.

Stage 3 will add 260 MW and approximately 1,216 MWh. Stanwell Corporation has secured the stage through a 15-year offtake agreement.

Consequently, the three stages will create 780 MW and 3,074 MWh of installed battery capacity. This configuration gives the project more than 3 GWh of storage for Queensland’s electricity market.

Quinbrook completed financial arrangements for Stage 3 after securing the required long-term commercial framework. Construction across the remaining stages will continue through 2027.

Queensland Supernode Battery Project strengthens grid resilience

The Queensland supernode battery project aims to solve a growing challenge facing renewable-heavy electricity systems. Solar and wind generation can fluctuate rapidly, creating demand for flexible dispatchable capacity.

The battery can store electricity when renewable generation exceeds demand. It can then release that electricity when demand rises or renewable output falls.

Its position beside the South Pine switchyard further strengthens its strategic value. The site connects directly to a major transmission point within Queensland’s electricity network.

Quinbrook estimates the fully operational project could avoid more than five million tones of CO₂ equivalent emissions. That estimate covers approximately 20 years of operation.

Furthermore, the project could reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking generation. It can also help absorb excess renewable electricity during periods of high solar output.

The development also forms part of a wider energy and digital infrastructure campus. Quinbrook plans hyperscale data-center infrastructure alongside the battery facilities. The wider Supernode development could attract more than A$3 billion in total investment.

Stage 4 and additional storage capacity remain under development. Quinbrook is also exploring longer-duration battery technology for future expansion.

Therefore, the project’s latest milestone extends beyond battery construction. It positions Brendale as an important infrastructure hub for Queensland’s renewable-energy and digital economy.

The project reflects Australia’s accelerating investment in grid-scale battery storage. Another major development is the 200 MW/400 MWh New England BESS in New South Wales. That project is being built alongside the 720 MW New England Solar Farm near Uralla. It combines battery storage with large-scale solar generation to improve renewable power reliability.
