Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital has reached a new pre-construction milestone, with newly designed hoardings installed around its future site on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The October 19, 2026, update confirms visible progress as the project team prepares the Full Business Case for final approval. Main construction remains scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion expected in 2030 and the hospital targeting an opening in 2031.
The seven-storey specialist hospital will bring cancer diagnosis, treatment and research together within one facility. It will combine NHS clinical services with three University of Cambridge research institutes, supporting closer collaboration between clinicians and scientists. The project aims to improve early cancer detection, personalize treatment and accelerate the translation of research discoveries into patient care.
Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital prepares for construction
The latest site hoardings feature patients, staff and members of the project’s Patient Advisory Group. Their involvement reflects the hospital’s commitment to incorporating patient experiences into the building’s design and future clinical services. Dr Hugo Ford, the hospital’s clinical lead, described the installation as a visible milestone in the development.
Meanwhile, the project team continues to develop the clinical pathways that will connect hospital services with research programmes. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Cambridge are working with patients and families on these plans. The collaboration will help shape how clinicians diagnose cancers earlier and deliver more personalised treatment.
The project has planning permission and an approved Outline Business Case. Laing O’Rourke remains the appointed construction partner, working with the project team on design development and construction planning. The Full Business Case represents the remaining major approval stage before the project can progress towards its main construction phase.
Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital targets 2030 completion
The hospital will occupy approximately 26,300 square metres across seven storeys on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Its planned facilities include 77 individual inpatient rooms, an expanded outpatient department and a larger day patient unit. The design also includes a Teenage and Young Adult Ward and three specialist research institutes.
Earlier preparatory work has included archaeological investigations and detailed ground surveys. In May 2026, specialist teams carried out borehole investigations, ground-penetrating radar surveys and ground-bearing tests. These activities help engineers assess subsurface conditions and inform foundation design before major building works begin.
Cambridge University Hospitals confirmed in September 2026 that the team was working towards submitting the Full Business Case to regulators in January 2027. Subject to the necessary approvals, construction should take approximately three years, concluding in 2030. The hospital is then expected to open in 2031, following handover and preparations for clinical operations.
The development forms part of wider investment in specialist hospital infrastructure. Ireland’s National Maternity Hospital construction project is expected to begin in early 2027 at St Vincent’s University Hospital campus in Dublin. The €1.86 billion project will deliver a seven-storey hospital with 244 beds, 24 birthing rooms and five operating theatres, with completion targeted for 2033.

Construction start date for the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital
Construction for the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital is set to start in 2024. At the same time, they’re working carefully on the detailed business plan to make the hospital’s plans even better. This fits with the big plan of the government to build 40 new hospitals in England by 2030. The New Hospital Program to build new 40 hospitals will cost the government £20 billion to complete.
The hospital’s design, skillfully crafted by NBBJ and engineered by AECOM, underwent rigorous planning. Thus, a comprehensive planning application was submitted to the Cambridge City Council in January, with a decision anticipated later this year.
Leading the Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital construction effort is Laing O’Rourke. A company with an impressive portfolio of 18 major hospitals constructed post 2010. Rory Pollock, healthcare sector leader at the firm, emphasized their commitment to modern construction methods for optimal efficiency.
Additionally, the initiative stems was a response from concerns over the use of structurally fragile materials, including reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), in hospital construction projects. This prudent response addresses previous issues, exemplified by Hitchingbrooke in Huntingdon.
