Citizens Memorial Hospital expansion project in Bolivar, Missouri is moving into its final delivery phase as the healthcare provider advances a US$100 million hospital upgrade and addition aimed at modernising rural healthcare services across southwest Missouri. The project includes a new three-storey 117,000-square-foot hospital tower and the renovation of roughly 25,000 square feet of existing space, significantly expanding the hospital’s footprint. A major milestone was achieved with the completion of the tower structure, followed by a public grand opening event held on February 28, 2026, allowing community members to tour the new spaces ahead of activation. Clinical transition is expected to begin in April 2026, when key patient care functions will start operating from the new facility. The project is one of the largest investments in the hospital’s history and is expected to strengthen emergency response capability and critical care capacity for the region.

The expansion programme is designed to enhance care delivery through upgraded emergency, intensive care, maternity, inpatient, and support services. The new addition includes a significantly expanded Emergency Department, upgraded ICU and progressive care capacity, and new inpatient private rooms, alongside improvements to key operational spaces such as pharmacy and dining services. Renovation work within the original hospital is also continuing, with upgrades planned for surgical services and cardiac catheterisation laboratories as part of the overall modernisation strategy through the end of 2026. The project reflects a broader trend in U.S. healthcare construction where rural hospitals are investing heavily in critical care and emergency infrastructure to improve local access, reduce patient transfers, and meet growing healthcare demand. This same reinvestment cycle is also visible in Missouri’s paediatric healthcare sector, where the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital project has recently topped out as part of a US$600 million redevelopment effort aimed at replacing aging facilities and expanding specialised treatment capacity. Once fully commissioned, the upgraded Citizens Memorial Hospital is expected to provide a higher standard of patient experience and improved operational efficiency while supporting long-term regional healthcare resilience.

Reported 29th September 2023: Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Missouri, is getting a $100 million expansion. The hospital celebrated its 41st anniversary with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday. The three-story, 117,000-square-foot extension on the hospital’s south side will more than quadruple its size. Additionally, a renovated kitchen and eating area, a hospital pharmacy, and an expanded gift shop are among the additional offerings.

Work on “make-ready” operations to prepare the building site will begin this autumn. These projects include office relocation, kitchen and cafeteria renovations, and increased parking. The new facility’s construction will begin in early 2024.

Comments on the Citizens Memorial Hospital expansion

“The Board of Directors believes this project is critical to our ability to continue our success for the next generation,” said Pat Douglas, chair of the CMH Board of Directors.

“This groundbreaking commemorates the 41st anniversary of the hospital’s opening on September 28, 1982,” stated Michael Calhoun, CEO/executive director of Citizens Memorial Health Care Foundation and CMH. ” Furthermore, the expansion will house all inpatient areas.” After completion, we will repurpose space within the present hospital complex.”

“We will always be thankful for those who formed the Hospital District in the 1970s,” stated Calhoun. “I am inspired by their perseverance and vision for a better future for Bolivar, Polk County, and beyond.” Moreover, with this expansion, we position CMH for sustained development and service to the community and region’s patients.”

USDA Rural Development is supporting the project with 64 million dollars in low-interest loans to be repaid over 34 years. Further, according to USDA RD state director Kyle Wilkens, the organization’s predecessor donated financing for the new hospital in 1980.
