King Salman Stadium construction plans have progressed with US-based Populous unveiling detailed designs for Riyadh’s flagship sports infrastructure project. Currently the project has advanced to prequalification phase following a notice issued by Saudi Ministry of Sport. The process advances a $2.7 billion flagship stadium project in Riyadh. It also supports preparations for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The stadium will accommodate over 92,000 spectators and serve as the national football team headquarters, supporting Saudi Arabia’s 2034 FIFA World Cup ambitions.
The stadium will feature hospitality suites, VIP lounges, a royal box, and multi-sport facilities, including an Olympic-sized pool and athletics track. Construction is scheduled for completion by 2029, integrating urban planning, sustainability, and world-class design standards.

The King Salman Stadium plans encompass 660,000 sq m, including 360,000 sq m of sports and training facilities. Two training fields, fan zones, indoor sports halls, and courts for volleyball, basketball, and padel will support multi-sport use. Green walls, rooftop walking paths, and landscaped areas highlight sustainable and community-oriented design.

The King Salman Stadium plans support Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 sports strategy. It will host the 2034 FIFA World Cup final and serve as a hub for national sports programs. Additionally, the project reflects urban development integration with King Abdulaziz Park and complements the kingdom’s growing stadium infrastructure across multiple cities. The Scope of Implementation on the King Salman Stadium
The design and scope of the King Salman stadium is astoundingly creative and one that will be a commendable endeavor. The venue of the stadium is expected to feature internal screens, gardens, and climbing walls. It will also include and aquatics center with and Olympic-sized swimming pool and smaller athletics stadium. The stadium is expected to be constructed next to a very large park area that is currently under construction. The design entails the inclusion of a running track through the park.

Populous noted that the inspiration for the design is drawn from Saudi Arabia’s mesmerizing natural landscape. It also noted that the symbolic concept of each venue within the masterplan represents a seed that germinates, hence the design. “The planting of these ‘seeds’ signifies Saudi Arabia’s commitment to nurturing and growing sports participation across the country, from the grassroots to the elite level,” Populous added. Completion of the King Salman Stadium and Masterplan is scheduled for late 2029. It will also serve as the primary headquarters for the national soccer team.

The construction and implementation of the King Salman Stadium is one of the many stadiums taking shape in the Gulf region. It includes others such as the Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Stadium and the Qiddiya Esports Arena. All these projects are being managed and implemented by Populous, showcasing their competence. The nation has its hands full with projects as it is, but they aim to deliver. The Kingdom notes that other projects such as the Line and the Mukaab are still in full gear towards completion. Selection of Populous as its contracted company is one that is commendable, considering the company’s stellar record.

The US-based company is making strides, especially in the implementation of stadiums across the world. It is also involved in the construction of the world’s largest stadium in Morocco, the Grand Stade Hassan II stadium. Expected to have a capacity of 115,000 spectators, the stadium is expected to be a grand feat. The Arab world seems determined to ensure that it sets a mark in the sporting world. The achievements however are noticeable, with Morocco’s commendable play in the 2022 World Cup and Saudi Arabia’s ambition to make its league world class.
