The SQU–Khoud Six Dual Carriageway Project in Muscat Oman continues to advance as part of Oman’s broader strategy to upgrade critical urban transport infrastructure and ease congestion in the Al Khoudh–Sultan Qaboos University corridor. The project strengthens connectivity between key residential, educational, and healthcare zones in the Wilayat of Seeb.

Moreover, it enhances traffic flow along one of Muscat’s most congested suburban routes. Authorities initially launched the scheme to improve road safety and reduce travel bottlenecks around Sultan Qaboos University. The dual carriageway also supports growing urban expansion in the surrounding districts.

The project extends from the roundabout of Khoud district 6 to the traffic light intersection that is located right in front of gate No. 2 of the Sultan Qaboos University.

SQU–Khoud Six Dual Carriageway Project in Muscat Oman improves traffic flow and safety

The SQU–Khoud Six Dual Carriageway Project in Muscat Oman was designed to convert the existing single corridor into a modern dual carriageway system. The scope includes two lanes in each direction across a 3.5-kilometre stretch. Additionally, pedestrian pathways extending approximately 7 kilometers enhance accessibility and safety for non-motorized users.

Furthermore, the project replaces the existing Al Khoud 6 roundabout with a signalized four-way intersection. A second controlled intersection is also constructed near Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. These upgrades significantly improve traffic distribution in a rapidly growing urban zone.

Side barriers and drainage infrastructure were also integrated into the design to improve resilience during heavy rainfall events. Consequently, the project enhances both operational efficiency and road safety standards across the corridor.

SQU–Khoud Six Dual Carriageway Project in Muscat Oman reaches advanced construction stage in 2026

As of 2026, the SQU–Khoud Six Dual Carriageway Project in Muscat Oman is at an advanced completion stage, with most structural works either completed or nearing finalization. The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has continued supporting parallel road network upgrades in Muscat to complement this corridor.

Moreover, the project forms part of a wider infrastructure push across the capital region, where multiple expressway and dualization schemes are being executed simultaneously. These efforts collectively aim to reduce congestion and improve interconnectivity between major highways and residential clusters.

In addition, ongoing works in nearby corridors such as Muscat Expressway expansion and Al Khoudh road upgrades reinforce the strategic importance of this route in the national road network.

The SQU–Khoud Six Dual Carriageway Project in Muscat Oman aligns with regional infrastructure expansion trends across the Gulf, including large-scale transport upgrades such as the Asir–Jazan Road Project in Saudi Arabia, which reflects similar goals of improving intercity connectivity, reducing travel time, and supporting economic integration through modern highway systems.

Scope of the SQU-Khoud Six dual carriageway project

The SQU-Khoud Six dual carriageway project involves the development of two lanes, with a total of 3.5 kilometers in each direction, alongside side lanes for pedestrians that will run for 7 kilometers running in both directions. The project will also feature the installation of water crossings as well as side barriers.

As per the construction contract, the existing roundabout located in the sixth district of Al Khoud will be converted into a four-way intersection that will also include light signals. The four-way intersection will be built to lead to the front entrance that leads up to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. This will specifically be in front of gate number 2 of the Sultan Qaboos University, the only public university in the Sultanate of Oman
