The Visakhapatnam Data Centre project has moved into the construction phase after Google, Adani Group, and Airtel officially broke ground on the $15 billion digital infrastructure development in Andhra Pradesh. The large-scale project aims to establish India’s biggest AI-ready data center ecosystem while strengthening cloud computing, subsea connectivity, and renewable-powered digital infrastructure across the country.

The project was first announced in October 2025 as a five-year investment programme running from 2026 to 2030. Since then, authorities have advanced land allocation, infrastructure approvals, and site preparation works across multiple campuses in Visakhapatnam. Recent updates confirm that construction activities officially commenced in April 2026 following a groundbreaking ceremony attended by senior government officials and technology executives.

Google stated that the development will create a gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem capable of supporting high-density computing workloads and advanced cloud services. AdaniConneX will lead construction of the core data center infrastructure while Airtel’s Nxtra division will support fiber connectivity and subsea cable integration. Furthermore, the project includes renewable energy infrastructure designed to power large-scale AI operations sustainably.

The Visakhapatnam project also reflects India’s wider push toward localized AI-ready infrastructure. Similarly, the recently announced Uber India Data Center project with Adani Group highlights increasing demand for hyperscale facilities supporting cloud computing, mobility technologies, and AI deployment across India. Current status of the Visakhapatnam Data Centre

Construction activities officially began in April 2026 at sites located around Tarluvada and surrounding areas near Visakhapatnam. Government authorities also approved hundreds of acres for the broader AI campus development as part of Andhra Pradesh’s strategy to position the region as a global technology and connectivity hub.

According to project partners, the development will eventually deliver nearly 1 GW of data center capacity with future expansion potential reaching 5 GW. In addition, Airtel plans to establish a new international cable landing station in Visakhapatnam to improve global connectivity and reduce dependence on existing western Indian gateways.

Industry analysts expect the project to generate substantial construction activity during the next several years because hyperscale AI facilities require specialized cooling systems, advanced electrical infrastructure, and high-capacity networking installations. Moreover, Andhra Pradesh officials believe the investment could position Visakhapatnam among Asia’s leading AI and cloud computing hubs.

Scope of the Visakhapatnam Data Centre

Also, the project will consist of gigawatt-scale data centre operations. These operations will be supported by a robust subsea cable network and clean energy solutions which are aimed at powering the most demanding AI workloads in India. Additionally, the initiative will be implemented in close collaboration with ecosystem partners which include AdaniConneX and Airtel.

Key pillars of the mega data centre campus project include purpose-built AI data centre infrastructure in Visakhapatnam. These infrastructure will significantly boost compute capacity. Also, the infrastructure will help to drive a generational leap in India’s AI capabilities.

Lastly, the partnership also stresses sustainability, with co-investment in new transmission lines, clean energy generation, and innovative energy storage systems that are in Andhra Pradesh. Furthermore, these initiatives will support the data centre’s operations while enhancing the resilience and capacity of India’s electricity grid.

Google Emerges as a Leading Data Center Developer Globally

Google is undoubtedly making a mark in data centre development company. The US-based company has seen major investments in development of data center projects globally as it seeks to expand its market and portfolio. In another major data centre development by Google, the company is also engaging in talks to construct Europe’s largest data centre in UK’s Teesside .
